View Full Version : Help understanding Stiching
speedsix 08-22-2003, 05:34 PM I'm totally confused about the difference between Align/Attach/Stitch surfaces, they seem to be the same?
Also I thought stitching meant the surfaces hold together, all it seems to do is align the edges, moving 1 of the surfaces pulls apart the stitch??
I want to attach 2 surfaces so when I distort one the other distorts with it?
Many thanks

"Stitching" means creating surface continuity and can include creating first-derivative continuity (which ensures that you get a sharp edge at the boundary.)
Stitching does NOT mean constraining one edge to remain coincident with another edge. If you stitch two surfaces and then pull them apart, they will not remain constrained at that edge, but they will retain their shapes so that they would be continuous when placed together as they were at the time of the stitching.
Maya's stitcher is not that good, but there aren't many commercially-available third-party alternatives, so people limp along with it. It requires very careful attention to good modeling techniques and good parameterization to make it work well.
If you want two stitched surfaces to stay stuck together, what you should do is use a deformer to deform both surfaces rather than trying to pull CVs around on one and expect the other to follow.
Alternatively, if you want to cover one surface with another so that one drives the other one's shape, you should use a wrap deformer.
