View Full Version : Water...?
raradolly 12-15-2009, 08:04 PM Well, I figured I'd better post this now before I officially finish it, because I'd rather the critique now when I still can fix things than when I'm done. I'm struggling with transforming this fabric into water a little... well not exactly struggling but just being frustrated at minutiae. Not sure how I feel about the koi by her shoulder either. I'm thinking of putting something else there. Her hair is also unfinished. Just so you guys know, this is an original character from my novel that I'll probably never get around to writing.

By all means, don't censor your comments, if you utterly loathe this entire thing, please let me know why. If you like it, also, please let me know why.

oh my, i love this :)
A few issues is that the lighting isn't consistent, some places where i think shadows should be( relating to the fish here) and some places where light should be reflected(glowing cherries effects nothing?).
i also must admit the figure is a kinda weird, did you use a model?
------------------
i love the colors, and the theme and image just some technical issues are there in my opinion...

Well, I haven't gotten around to doing the lighting from the fish or the evil apples, or apple rather, because only one of them is "real" and even then... it's not really real real. The figure was referenced so that shouldn't be "weird" but if you could elaborate on why...?

I really like this piece. :) haha, i see that you're just thinking of covering the cloth with the water splash since you can't think of how to properly transition it :P (I'd do the same)
Other than the little knit-picky stuff like bounce light and everything, which i'm sure you'll get around doing anyways, is the hair for me. I can see that the water is coming from the window and dress transition, so it throws me off how it looks as if her hair is underwater too. There is no source of water near her hair.

Great work, still I don't get this in her left leg:

...And I think the shadow of the border of the window shouldn't be darker than the outdoor sky.

First of all, this is a surreal type painting. Her hair is floating because it's special, and I wanted it to, that's not something I'm going to change. Several elements in this piece are supposed to be unreal but real. Like the tree, the hair, the water, the fish 'flying', and the painting of the outside actually being a window. Which is why the shadow of the window is darker than the outside. Although that might be something I change, I'm not sure. I was hoping things like that might be a little more understood. As far as not understanding her left leg there, I'm not sure what you don't understand? There is a thin layer of fabric covering both places. Should I add droplets in that one place? She is also sitting on something. Or is it that her butt is partially showing? I used a model, so this is what the model's anatomy looked like, which I consider normal and natural. The thigh at that angle creates a fold. Mine does this as well. As far as the cloth goes. At first it is covered, then it turns, but thus far I haven't figured out how to turn it, so I've only covered it. I need to paint under some of the droplets that I've already made. It's just not something I fully understand quite yet. I can't seem to find good images to reference this from either. >_<

hm, perhaps the shados are effecting my interpretation of the figure, for so much of the back to be sticking out i'd assume the left shoulder shouldn't be visible...thus feels 'backbreaking'.
the position of the head and neck seem weird too, not gentle and relaxed but stressed and forced...
either reposition the shoulders or reposition the head, one way or another it doesn't look right left alone...
---
did you work from a photo of the model or from life? if you have a photo could you link it or something?
As far as not understanding her left leg there, I'm not sure what you don't understand?
i think he means that paricular fold seems to be something that would be along the but yet it sits further out than expected? is something making it fold like that? is the sense of perspective wrong?
baisicly that fold(and lump) in the skin does not physical sense...
---
Her hair is floating because it's special, and I wanted it to, that's not something I'm going to change.
He assumed there was water (mystical water?) around the hair cfausing it to float, he thought it should be defined as such...
which to me would make sense of the whole picture rather than saying, 'its floating because its floating'

I like it, but I would change a few things. The hair on the left looks a little too "dread" like, a little too clumpy.
The part of the leg that has been brought up is, I'm sure, very faithful to the reference pic, but it does look a little wonky. I think it's because the edge of the stool is cutting into the leg a little, but that fact is somewhat obscured by the cloth. I guess I would cheat it just a little by making the crease less noticeable and leveling out the butt (does that make sense?). Or maybe by making the cloth more opaque in that area. Or, just leave it. Sometimes things don't look right even though they are. What can you do?
Maybe tweak the eyes a bit. I don't quite get the feeling that she is looking directly at the fish.
The last thing is kind of funny to me, but I just can't help but be reminded of a giant condom covering her arm. Sorry
Very nice work though.
Edit: I'm sure you've seen it, but if you google "water dress", there are some photos that may be useful for you.

This is what I meant:

I think you might add a fold, but from that position it would be impossible to see nothing more than a part of the quadriceps, and IMHO, the fold would be a lot less noticeable.
This is only my humble opinion and what it looks like to me. This is a quick overpaint, so there should be more detail and light to the part I painted over... it's just an example.
I also think I would add a little more of highlight to the lips and a little little bit more of light to the face.
I really like how you rendered the clothes and the waterdrops. It made me remember an old book about professional airbrushing. It's a really nice work.
