hi,
for a new character model i have to deal with cloth simulation - something, i've not done in the past. there seems to be a lack of information regarding this, what i've found while digging through tutorials and discussion forums are simple scenes, e.g. the famous flag/cape blowing in the wind or pieces of cloth that are falling over another object.
also it seems that simcloth3 is the prefered tool for cloth simulation these days. unfortunatley all the online help covers is a brief description of the parameters.
so i jumped right in and generated a cloth test object by duplicating my character mesh, erasing some detail, re-sizing it by applying a push modifier and finally used solidify to give it some thickness. i've made sure that no part of the cloth intersects with the character in the default pose and used a meshsmooth to make the cloth smooth.
for a quick test, i've set up my scene as follows:
- everything is scaled to real world dimensions
- everything is an editable poly and has been raped by reset-xform
- there's a gravity space warp in the scene (strength 1,0) <- i added this after a few tries to deal with "hovering" and it seems to have some effect
now when i start the calculation (with default simcloth values), it seems to go well for a few frames, then suddenly the cloth objects starts to hover and jump around, while heavily intersecting with my model. not really what i wanted. i've encountered this with several - very different - character and cloth models and would really like to know what i'm doing wrong.
since it seems that here are some people who have used simcloth for "real" ;) tasks, i'd like to ask if someone could post up his settings that are used for character cloth simulation. also - what's your approach of modeling cloth? i've seen some examples of stitching patterns together but i assume that would not work with simcloth and in addition would make cloth generation even harder.
also, are there any tricks to settle the cloth on the mesh quickly? for acceptable results (even with the damn cloth over a table) it seems that many frames are neccessary until the cloth deformation is acceptable. do you use frames -100 to 0 for cloth settling prior to animation or what?
i'd really like to get some insights.
i've attached a picture of my poor cloth simulation results (http://home.arcor.de/th0mas_p/simcloth_issues.jpg) for your viewing pleasure - this is a scene without an additional gravity space warp.
