Ok so im finishing my rig that will primarily be used for games and 3D stuff. (Cinema 4D and as i slowly convert Maya) I mean IMO im fairly decent but i wont be making any trans formers soon ;D and all i know is lag makes me want to kill babies(current using a POS laptop, until xmas when im getting the processor)..... oh and stop projects (quit halfway threw a bugatti >>) so heres what im asking

My rig is going to have dual 4890's so the gaming side is well covered. but how well would these work with 3D software? Would it benefit me to get a FirePro V3700, or a FirePro V3750 (ill be getting either based on budget). I mean i will be doing some intensive things just not "studio grade" scenes persay. also i will be taking my rig to canada with me when i go to VFS next october so i can work on projects w/o being at the school.

tldr: i'm getting dual 4890's would i benefit from getting a FirePro V3700?

last note: ive noticed its got a crossfire prong would i be able to cross fire so i dont have to move the video cable when i decide to stop playing red faction and work with maya?

Maya is fussy with gaming cards and always has been. If you can live with a few glitches here and there then it'll work but you'll probably have to disable CrossFire. I wouldn't bother getting a workstation card from ATI, get a Quadro card if you're going to spend the money. Cheers!

Tom's Hardware - Benchmark SPECapc (http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/workstation-graphics-charts/compare,131.html?prod%5B310%5D=on&prod%5B1213%5D=on&prod%5B2008%5D=on&prod%5B308%5D=on)

heres the 4 i was looking at, ati seems more in the budget (will be mainly used for maya and 151.32 FPS seems pretty damn good IMO)

Its not about the frame rate, because I'm sure the 4890 will be more than sufficient in that department. If you're looking at workstation cards to get a better frame rate then stop looking because you're not going to get it. Its about the drivers and support when you're delivering a show and something isn't working. The FireGL/FirePro cards from ATI have less than stellar drivers and support. If you're going to spend the money on a workstation graphics card then get a Quadro. Otherwise use the gaming cards you already have and deal with the glitches here and there. You ask for advice and that's the advice, do what you want with it. Cheers!

Get the FIREPRO- the Radeons and Geforce are crap for newer editions of Maya regardless of what anyones opinion is. Fire's drivers have gotten much better- no issues for my buddy who has firepro with AMD CPU. I had issues with Geforce and Radeon. If you wanna use all of the features of Maya (especially if you're learning) then at least get a fire (any qualified ones on Autodesk list) or quadro (1800 is good enuff)

$80 NO- not for current Maya- maybe for 7 or older.

The Qualified Hardware List for Maya can be found at Autodesk.com- under Maya>Specs>qualified Hardware.. Will dig the link later

CDW.com under their Outlet: has older Quadro and Fire's cheap. or Ebay which I avoid at all cost>SCAMS.

I would go with nvidia and the reason is CUDA.That means you will be able to render from the GPU (nvidia) in realtime.
For example see these links:
http://furryball.aaa-studio.cz/
Register and dowload the free trial to test it.
and
http://www.mentalimages.com/products/iray.html
And don't forget that mental images belongs to nvidia.

Go with whatever your budget allows really. I've used everything from Quadro's and FirePro's to Radeon's and Geforce's In the early days there were some issues with the GeForce and Radeon cards but lately with the 200 series from Nvidia and the 5000 series from ATI I have yet to see any major issues in all my personal testing and use. My rig at home was running a GTX260 without a hiccup at all for a long time and when the Radeon 5000 series came out I decided to try a 5770 and a 5850 both without any major drawbacks or problems. In fact in the SpecAPC testing the GTX260 choked harder on the textured city test versus the 5770 and 5850 which stomped it.

For the naysayers about Crossfire, you can do it.. you just have to pay to play right now http://www.amd.com/us/products/workstation/graphics/crossfire-pro/Pages/crossfire-pro.aspx I've been running two 7750's with the latest drivers and they run top notch in Maya.

I'll hold back my CUDA comments and general proprietary technology rant :)
