View Full Version : Matrix style 'raining' code
mikethomas 08-22-2003, 01:01 PM anyone any ideas on how it might be possible to animate the matrix/matrix reloaded's 'raining code' effect in max 5.0?
thought about doing it with particles but just can't seem to get the text to generate properly.
thx in advance

combustion 2 has 2d paricle effects with the matrix set up as a default effect. Instant effect. Not sure how to do it in max tho.

I would make multiple characters (that you want to appear dropping down). (in MaxScript) Randomize their X-position, increment their Y-offset over time with a little random number added.
Then apply a falloff material to make that fading effect.
Just what I can come up with off the top of my head.

The matrix code letters do not "drop" from top-to-bottom. They simply change from character to character, and don't actually more at all.
The "movement" is a wipe which reveals the characters. Study the movie closely and you'll see the differencce.

I'd make an avi file with text that moves down at a quick rate and apply it as a texture and an opacity map, i'm pretty sure animated textures work.

Well, IMO neverwake was right. The matrix code canot be reproduced following a "drop sheme", its different. More "computer like", like you would "animate" in text mode. :)
Once, I wanted to do some animation like that, a scene built up with the matrix code, just like Neo saw the world in the final fight of the first episode.
At first, I'v etried to do it with a bunch of particles, and failed. Than, tried to do it with ThinkingParticles(from CEBAS) but - again - failed.
And than came a really simple, solution: First, back than, I was a real Matrix fan (damn that 2nd episode... damn...) and collected a bunch of Matrix code like screensavers. The "official" screen saver is, so to say, crap, useless, but there were some really nice home made matrix codes, and I only had to record it with a desktop movie capture app. (don't remember witch one...)
After this, some converted the avi into separate jpg-s, and extarcted the "opacity" with a few lined PS script. (Action...)
That was all. And to control the visibility of separate lines, I used animated gradient ramps.
It worked well. Only thing though, I was a jerk at UV mapping than. (Now, I'm a lesser jerk...) so the whole concept ended as a Ctrl+Del
Good luck!
