View Full Version : HMC #23 Ansel Adams Tribute: (Faithful Environment) Sierra Nevada
Paul4wood 12-14-2009, 02:21 PM I have decided to jump in and attempt something while waiting to see what the next big Challenge is going to be. I'm not expecting to achieve picture perfect realism here so I was going to classify it as "creative environment" but as I am basing it directly on one of Adams' photographs I have no choice but to go for "faithful environment".

Hmmm. I'm unable to upload images here. Is it neccessary to use links to external resources or can images be embedded here?

Yes you can upload an image as part of an attachment, but I recommend you use an xternal program like photobucket.
BTW I wish you luck on your entry.

Thank you Roberto. Photobucket it is.
This is the photograph that I will attempt to simulate in some way:

I found a much larger reference image and after some time in Google Earth I think that I have found the spot where Ansel Adams set up his tripod for this photograph. This allows me to get an idea of distance, which is not very apparent in the photo, and I can now see that I am going to have to start again if this is to be shown as a turntable video. Before I start over I'll post one more of this model:

Looking good so far.
Its nice to see A:M in action!
Are you going to use hair emitter with a tree alpha or actual tree models for the trees?

Hi, Photoman. So, I'm exposed.! ;) Yes, this is A:M. I am saving XSI for the BIG challenge. It has been a while and it will be the perfect excuse to plunge in again.
Yes, I intend to use hair for the trees otherwise the patch count is likely to be too high for my system. Hopefully I will make a fresh start tomorrow. (Oh! It's today already!)

It will be very interesting for me to see how far you can take this project, its very different from most of the other projects in the challenge. I like what you have so far, will be sweet when you get them trees growing on those lush hills. Keep up the good work

Agreed.
To be honest, I would preferred more open environment on the entries, since they tend to be more challenging.
I wish you good luck.

Thank you, aovesen and Roberto!
Unfortunately I barely made a start on the new model before the Christmas festivities took over. I checked the deadline for this challenge and it appeared to have finished on, or around, Boxing day as the challenge was meant to be one month from the 26th of November. I guess I blew it again! Oh well, there are some terrific examples of architecture that Ansel Adams photographed. I must admit though that I was expecting to see more examples of landscapes, which is what I really associate Adams with.

Thanks for the extension Roberto, but please don't hold out for me. I took my eye off the ball weeks ago and haven't really progressed with my entry.
Good luck to all who entered! There are some great pieces there.
