Hey guys..could anybody kindly point me in the direction to a tutorial for creating a good normal map for a rough wood texture?http://www.game-artist.net/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

Actually, any advice or tutorials for creating normal maps from photos would be very helpful.

Software I'm using:
Photoshop & Crazybump

just open the texture in Crazybump and click "Save Normal Map" It's that simple. you can fiddle with the settings whilst judging what you want with the 3D preview.

What usually works nice for me is to use a bump map and a normal map:

a) The bump map, I use it for high frequency stuff (example: the pores of my skin)

b) The normal map, I use it for low frequency stuff (example: where my nail meets my finger, if it is not modeled).

The thing is that the scale of your render determines what is low frequency and what is high frequency, the examples i gave there are for a render that shows my whole body, if i were going to do a closeup of my hand i would model the place where my nail meets finger, and the veins on my hand could be on the normal map, even the skin pores if it is a really close-and-personal tarantino style close up.
