View Full Version : Wacom Intuos 4 or Bamboo pen & touch?
Pinkybo 12-10-2009, 09:23 PM Hi all,
First off, I'm really new to all this. Right now, I'm interested in matt painting and 3d animation but I haven't picked one to specialize in. I would like to get a portable tablet for my laptop as I travel a lot with work and can practice on the go. I'm debating between:
The Wacom Intuos 4 small
or
The Wacom Bamboo pen and touch small.
I have a little exerience using a Wacom Intuos 2 tablet. So my question is, do I really need the extra sensitivity and tilt features of the Intuos 4 or will the bamboo pen and touch be acceptable? The Bamboo is quite a bit cheaper and has the same pressure sensitivity as the Wacom Intuos 2. I know I'm just starting out but I would like my tablet to last me a while, not become obsolete because it lacks features I might need down the road. I notice that on most websites the Bamboo Pen and Touch is advertised as being for home office use and not for creative artists. Also, the Bamboo tablet says that no special drivers come with it, it relies on the ones built into Vista/7. Will this make the pen inferior?
Those are my main concerns. Any advice is greatly appreciate.
Thanks!

hi,
i got bamboo pen and touch, the touch is not that responsive, and i dont use them. Frankly, im quite dissapointed with the bamboo pen and touch, its not as good as advertised.
as for wacom, i never have an experience about it. but for professional, i dont think pen and touch will fit you

As far as I know, the Bamboo touch is Wacom. Wacom is the brand name, Bamboo is the product they put out.
I'm in the same predicament as you OP, in that, I'm a student at Ai MN, going for Matte Painting amongst other things and I really need a tablet of some sort. Using a mouse to paint is like using a potato to draw, It just doesn't work.
The resounding answer that I've heard, and indeed you'll find more then a couple posts asking the same exact thing you just asked (Seach function!!), is that it all depends on the amount you are using it. If you are doing it every day, the Intous is definitely the way to go. It's 4x more responsive, the pen is more comfortable, more features that come with it and the tablet itself is indeed worth the money.
If your just doing this for school projects or what-not, and will not be doing this quite as often, the Bamboo will more then serve your purposes. By all means, it's a great tablet, and I haven't had many issues with it yet. Probably compared side-by-side with the Intous, it will pale in comparison, but that's to be expected.
It really is something that the more money you invest, the better quality an item you get.

Yes, Bamboo is made by Wacom. I have a Bamboo Fun for traveling around with my notebook. Works great! If you're on a limited budget, Bamboo is the way to go. But if you're serious about it and have the budget for it, get an Intuos.

Wacom Intuos hands down- the older Wacom Intuos3 would even be better than Bamboo as it is geared more to budget hardware and youths. I have the WacomIntuos3 mid size and it is even too big sometimes but the responsiveness is awesome- almost like sketching pen to paper.

Thanks everybody for your help. I decide to get the small Intuos 4. I'd rather have something that can last me a while, that I'm not going to outgrow in a year and I found it for a great price.

Also curious about the Bamboo Fun. My Intous 2 is on the blink and was wondering if the Bamboo Fun would be a good replacement. I've heard some say the Intous 4 is better but they're not able to articulate exactly why. And coming from an Intous 2, I wonder if I'd even notice any difference. I use it as a mouse alternative and use all the Adobe stuff as well as Cinema 4D. Anyone have any experience with how the Bamboo Fun would compare to an Intous 2? Thanks.
just for experience sharing, i did exactly the same try to change my mouse with bamboo fun. i mostly do 3D stuff. after one month, i never use the bamboo fun again. its not that comfortable imo. better go for a high end mouse. if your interest to bamboo fun triggered by the touch feature, i'd say dont, the touch is not there yet. i found my macbook multi touch is far more superior-er.
but again, its personal preference :D

Bamboo Fun is the kiddy version of Intuos- I think Bamboo just replaced Graphires which were the cheaper, less functional versions of intuos- I have Intuos 3 mid size and can say that it is more than enough (sometimes too big). Bamboo feels less quality and the pressure isn't as nice as Intuos.

After years of using an Apple G4 hockey puck mouse I can't use a mouse anymore. Wacom pen is the only thing I've found that works well.
I appreciate the feedback but "kiddy version" doesn't tell me much. As far as I can tell, from a specs standpoint, there isn't much difference from an Intuos 2 which is what I'm used to. Looking for specific experiences or hard specs I can compare to.
Haven't used the Bamboo series of Wacom, but I've used Wacom's older Graphire series prior to switching to the Wacom Intuos 3. Big difference for me. It's really hard to explain why, but it feels "just right". I guess I found the Graphire too smooth, whereas in the Intuos 3, it's like sketching on paper...the texture is just right.
I guess trying out both would be the best bet (if it were possible).
i had intuous 2 at my campus and i can barely notice the difference to my brand new bamboo, if thats the statement youre looking for.
