Sorry for posting another laptop discussion but I’ve hit a wall :( Apart from being quite large, arn’t all laptops art use. The XPS 16 looks ideal for my needs.

Windows 7
i7 720QM processor (1.60)
Great 16” RGBLED screen
4gb ram
500gb HDD
BluRay drive
9-cell battery.

Is the i7 faster than a Duo T9600 (2.80)?

As I said quite big, 384mm x 254mm x 24/33mm.. weighs 2.9kg… but needs a must, and much better than any Alienware or m4400/m6400 laptop. 50mm thick, I don’t think so :)

My only issue is with the graphics card, 1GB Radeon HD 4670. Now I’m going to be using this mainly for Maya, 3DSMax, Zbrush, Photoshop. As with everything 50% of people hate something whilst the other 50% love it. I’ve phoned Dell and they wont replace it with a Nvidia.

Have the ATI – Autodesk products history been put to death? I know it wont effect Zbrush or Photoshop. Will I loose my cursor and textures wont display using Maya/Max? :) I just cant find any solid info either way as to how this will behave.

I plan on gaming aswell, from what I can tell it will run Crysis pretty well. Dx 10.1, Shader 4.1 What more can you ask for these days.

Deciding what laptop to get is a nightmare! I want a company I can trust in a size that isnt a brick.

When comparing processors, especially the i7 quad cores to the Core 2 Duo, it's like comparing apples and oranges. The difference being in said chips is the architecture, and how it allows a flow of information. When your looking at the Ghz, that only determines the calculations it can make / thousandths of a second. Don't be fooled by this though, this doesn't mean automatically that if you have a processor that is a 3.08 and a processor that is 2.8, that doesn't mean the 3.08 is going to be better necessarily

When you look at a processor, compare it to a central nervous system of the human body. It controls the speed at which everything is happening, how well the system can multitask, amongst just a few things to name. When you are comparing the i7 to the Core 2 Duo's, like I said, apples and oranges. The i7 is suited for faster flows of information, and will work up to 100% better then the Duo, not to mention it also supports hyper threading. If you don't understand what hyper-threading is, basically it means that the processor cores will not only share the work-load when needed, but it will also allow for 2x threads of code per core to run simultaneously, which, again will boost the speed.

So to answer your question, yes, the i7 will be MUCH faster then the t9600

As for Windows 7, it should come with Dx11, while you'll experience no huge net increase in performance, it is nice to have =D

Thank you for the info! Very helpful/informative. I've decided
to go with it... Besides Dell have a 7 day money back anyway, I'll be able to tell very quickly if it isn't happy with Maya /Max

Hi Seven
Would you mind to post a quick 'first impression' when you receive the Dell? I would be interested in the performance and basic things like battery life etc... the Dell is on my shortlist as well.
Thx
P
