View Full Version : Maya exporting

I had a few questions relating to exporting in Maya...

1) It seems that exporting scenes from Maya isnt the easiest thing in the world since the impression I have gotten is that not many programs support Maya's .mb file system. Im assuming that plug-ins exist for most programs to bring in this file system if it doesnt origionally support it... if this is the case, how well do these work? and how simple are they? ( I remember getting a plug-in that brought in files like .obj and such into Maya, but it was pretty flawed)

2) I have never worked with more than one program for a scene, so Im not to familiar with the exporting process. If I where to create a full scene in maya, with bones and animation and such.. is it possible to bring the full thing, including textures and such, over to a program like 3dsmax, and still retain all the information?

3)I was poking around in the translucancy thread in here, and inside it, was a post showing off some renders that a program called Brazil did, and they look exactly like what I need for the project I am currently working on. After a bit of research the impression I get is that Brazil is an render add-on for Max.. is this correct?

4) Are there any render engines similar to Brazil for Maya? I get the impression that Mental Ray is similar, but I have read about a lot of problems associated with Mental Ray.. and I don']t think Turtle has been released yet, which looks rater good.. Any suggestions?

5) Is posting mass question threads like this annoying? :) and if so, I appologize

1. Yes, can't recall one that import .mb files directly. Yes there are plug-ins to do the job. Depends: Okino is number 1 (IMHO, industrial strenght) and people like FBX Kaydara. There are other nice ones around, though.

2. Hard to tell. I would expect minor issues if you are working with high quality translators and simpler scenes. However, there are always some things that are left out of the scope of the translation here and there. I never worked with the specific issue you mentioned (e.g. bindings) so I cannot say a word about that. I would recommend you thouroughly checking the specs of the plug-in (or stand alone) you have in mind before getting into this potential pitfall. Better yet: get a demo.

3. Yes, it is a plug. But If I am not mistaken, Max and Maya have translucency by default... Maybe you are talking about SubSurface Scattering SSS, which is achievable through Mental Ray (if I am not mistaken, please someone correct me here!) or at least similar results.

4. Yes there are a lot of them and more are coming (e.g. final render, VRay, I guess). Heck, for the price of Lightwave now you can buy it and use as a renderer (maybe it is cheaper than Brazil itself). As for some issues, they are there but Maya->MR connection has improved a lot with version 5. Works smooth here... Also Maya default renderer is not as bad as people wnat you to believe...

5. Not to me;)

Thank you so much for your detailed reply!!

Maybe you are talking about SubSurface Scattering SSS,

I was :)

<sigh> I wish I had acess to Lightwave.. I have just been itching to get my grubbies on it. If anything, I could always plead with my old animation teacher from school to let me give it a run at his house...

Provide backup while I run out the backdoor with his copy!!!

<runs off into the sunset, with Lightwave underarm, cackling madly>

Coming from a Max background I found Lightwave interface hard to work with (I know I will get flamed by this comment. Please note I did not use the words "worse" or "better"). But it seems that it has a pretty big legion of fans.
Maya has a steep learning curve IMHO. Much steeper than Max, I must say. And again, IMHO, it pays.

There are lots of threads addressing the pros and cons of each app. Make sure you take a look on them before making your mind: it is definitely worth it.

Cheers

EDIT: Sorry, I thought you were thinking about switching apps but I just read this

So I guess you already r very familiar with Maya, right?;)

Please disregard what I just wrote...
