View Full Version : PCI Express slot question
nazcaLine 12-08-2009, 05:54 PM I have a pc with a DP965LT intel motherboard. I currently have a nVidia GE force 7300LE graphics card, and i want to replace it with a new one, for example a 9800GT or a Quadro GTX. However, in the specifications for these new cards it says it uses PCI Express 2.0 bus. My motherboard has PCI Expressx16 only, it doesn't mention 2.0
My question is: are they the same? Can or can't i install these new graphics cards?
I hope you can help me, thank you

PCI Express 2.X has double the bandwidth of PCI Express 1.X per lane. Devices that run on either should work in motherboards that have either. Kind of like USB 1.X and 2.X, they both work with one another but the newer version is faster. Cheers!

oh, i understand now! thanks!
but...if the data transfer won't be as fast as it was designed to, say, if i buy a 1 gb video card, then it won't take full advantage of its power, right? if so, then probably i won't benefit much...what i need is to manage millions of poligons on screen, i don't mind much about texture display.

Even the fastest video cards barely utilize the full potential for PCI Express 1.X, so you're not missing out on much if you use a PCI Express 2.X card in a PCI Express 1.X motherboard. Cheers!
