View Full Version : 3ds Max Render Farm

We are currently looking at switching from Maya to Max.

We currently have a render farm of 30+ nodes all running SUSE linux and standalone versions of Mental Ray (64 bit) using MentalQueue as a scheduler.

Is Windows+Max the only method of rendering Max scenes on the render farm, since there doesnt seem to be a linux version of 3ds Max 2010?

I was hoping there is a way to use linux since that would require a whole lot of windows licenses, and the overhead on each machine would be higher since the OS is "windows"

no - 3dsMAX is Windows only, as is the mental ray renderer version it uses.

I would not recommend WINE or any other windows emulators running on Linux rendernodes..this will slow things down needlessly.

There are some third party renderers that run on Linux for Max like Maxwell Render, but why would you want to completely move to Max anyway? If you're starting with a clean slate and have to redo everything anyway why not use something like XSI (which has crosswalk to talk to Maya) or Houdini (that can fill in many gaps that Maya leaves). Those could compliment or replace the current pipeline and not have to redo everything since both of those applications run on Linux. Like I said there are Linux renderers for Max but it seems like taking two steps forward and three steps back. Cheers!

Could you state the reason why you are moving from one package to the other?

What have you planed to do with all your Maya licenses, would you keep or sell them?
Which version of Maya do you use right now?

Switching from Maya to Max would safe you a lot of money, instaed of upgrading to Maya 2010, maybe you plan to reinvest that money in to a Windows environment (?).

I would also like know why you are planing to move from one package to an other?
