This is my latest personal work inspired on District 9. The idea is based on the end of the movie, when the main character is making a flower for his wife. I tried to get that moment of solitude and longing.

This was mostly a rendering, texture, lighting and a "try to get close to a 3d feel" exercise.

For the work, I used a promotional image (http://slug45.jarfil.net/img/district9/ref.jpg) from the movie as reference, and I tried to get close to the reference but I didn't worry about getting a perfect copy. I didn't use any texture image as overlay, just 2 basic brushes (hard round, soft round) and 2-3 tweaked brushes from photoshop for texturing.

I'm sorry I only got a few images of the process, but well, you know how difficult is to remember doing a capture while working, as well as saving as... :).

Any comments, crits and/or questions are most welcome, thanks.

this is one of those cases where a pre-visualization might have been nicer...i personally find it lacks dimension even though you did the look very nicely.

using blender or something like that to create a very simple but similar shape (you could use a bunch of distored squares) and model a simple flower(as in a distorted square on a stick)...this could keep make the image have depth.

then again the problem could be in the lighting since it doesn't appear to recede to the background, as in closer lighter, further darker, the back lighting you added takes away from the dimensional feel. (i hope its not a problem but i tested it out by darkening the area around the alien and it did look much better in terms of depth)...if you want to do back lighting perhaps changing the color of the back light might prevent this 2d look...

instead of trying to match the look of the reference add your own insight, since 2d painting is much different from 3d rendering some things could work some others might not...

(BTW: i loved the movie 7 samurai)

Theblackmage, thanks a lot for the comments!.

Yep, I've been thinking about the general lighting/BG and some other things to fix (like the eyes), but I haven't been able to spend more time on it, but I will asap.

At first, I centered on texturing and matching the original image, but it seems it needs a little bit more of work and a lot more of personal interpretation to make it work.

I'm just finishing other projects and will try to upload an update this week.

..I forgot to add: Kurosawa was a f**ng genius :_)
