I would highly suggest you to get books on Illumination for traditional photography.
Those techniques, besides being software agnostic, are only going to get more important as unbiased render engines come closer to dominate the market.

Buy, in good grade hardback, all five volumes of the Morgan & Morgan Basic Photo Series by Ansel Adams: The Camera, The Negative, The Print, Natural Light Photography, and Artificial Light Photography.
Spend the next two years of your life slowly reading them . . .
"What? What does an old fogey's books about black-and-white photography and bellows cameras have to do with computer graphics?" Everything.

In addition to the above posts I would also suggest that you buy "Digital Lighting and Rendering" by Jeremy Birn. He also runs the Lighting Challenges here on CGTalk, which is a great way to work on your lighting skills.
Just my two cents.
