View Full Version : translate and rotate pissing me off
harmonic01 08-21-2003, 12:17 PM Hey guys. I'm a max user and just downloaded Softimage XSI Experience. Really curiouse about using the program, but one thing that really really really really annoys me is that, why the hell can't I just grab the axis that I want to transform or rotate on? Like in max or maya. bleh, and to transform on 2 axis at the same time, I actually have to go and click on the 2 axis I want to transform on before doing it. Maybe I'm just too used to max or maya way of doing it, but is there a way to do it in XSI too?
Or I'll just have to get used to XSI unique way?

In 3.5 you will be able to grab the manipulators just like maya. They haven't made a EXP version of 3.5 yet, so you just have to wait :)
But the mapping on the mouse with the three buttons are (from left to right) X Y Z
So to rotate in X you use the left mousebutton, moving the object up in Y you will use the middle button.

uh, thanks StefanA. Yeah, I just find that 3 mouse button thing inconvenient.

for us old school Softimage|3D users it's a second nature :) I actually find the other way a little bit messy... but it all depends of where you come from.
I'm beginning to like the manipulators more and more though.

This has to be the number one complaint of new users trying out XSI from Max and Maya.
Stefan is right though. I was using Max for a number of years but in XSI I have gotten to the point that if I want to move in Z, just use the right mouse button. No need to hunt for the transform manipulator. No need to make sure that the view port has the manipulator present. No need to try and click on the right axis and keep getting the wrong one.
3.5 has added the Max and Maya way of moving the transform gizmo. But Soft even went further. They give you 4 options for how you want to interact with the transform gizmo.
My favorite is Using the Old Soft 3D way along with the new way. So I can use the transform manipulator if I want or still do it the old XSI way. Plus it also gives me the ability to constrain in more then one access. Which I wanted anyway even without the 3D manipulators, just nice that I can do it now.
The new stuff in XSI 3.5 was a good move. Making it even easier to move over to XSI from other packages.
Hopefully soon, when the XSI "Lite" version ships with Half-Life 2 you will get a chance to check out the new 3D manipulator.

Ooooooh, XSI lite will come on Half Life 2 cds?
Well, manipulator is really minor. I can see how that can be comfortable, I'm just not used ot it.

Heres the thread about the XSI Lite and HL2

It always takes a little getting use to using any new tool. This is no different.
Buts nice to know that Softimage listens to the users needs adds features like the 3D manipulator to make everyone who wants it happy.
Thats part of the reason why XSI and Softimage are doing well. Customers know that they are being listened to and that their input can make a difference.

what pisses me off is the pivot manipulator can't be placed using any mode except view! This seems very unsoftimage like, I expected to be able to move the pivot using rmb=xyz rahter than just dragging it around in an arbitrary way parrallel to view plane. Snapping to get an exact location just doesn't cut it when you want the pivot OFF the geometry as will often occur.
But as usual Soft listened and on the list said they just couldn't get this functionality in this version, so perhaps the next one :)

Actually as soon as I started using the manipulators I just couldn't live without them. I thinkg they are well done.
Today I happened to do a quick use of XSI 3.0, and suddenly felt completely disoriented!
I agree that the functionality Graham is asking would be a big plus, but still, the actual ones are nice! I too use the SI3D-XSI mode
