View Full Version : Spaceship lighting and integration
bio2000 08-21-2003, 11:35 AM Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out what would be the best way to light my spaceship for future compositing in combustion! Right now im working in 3dsMax5 with scanline render and standard lighting, but not really satisfied with the results!
Maybe any1 has an idea about what technique to use, or what color/lighting scheme would be the best!
attached is just a small test im working on...

You need some brown (back)light to start with! After that, place some blueish lights imitating the sky.
The bottom of the spaceship is way too lit, also. Try think you're the bottom of the spaceship - how much light will you be able to see?
A thing you might want to try is adding particles for dust blowing up. Might hide some of the "fakeness" with the picture :-)
Tweak, tweak and tweak. Try come up with 3 different results we can give a verdict on.

The color scheme for the lights should come from the background plate - get RGB values from the white and blue in the sky for key lighting from above, and from the earth tones below for fill lights from below.
Don't use that specularity on the fill - you really only need specularity from the key light, then add a reflection map based on your environment. Adjust the gamma to see the comp brightened up alot, and make sure the dark tones of the ship match the dark tones of the background plate, and then adjust down and check the highlights and bright spots on the ship to make sure they match the background plate. A classic problem is that CG elements will have darker blacks in their shadows or unlit regions than any part of the background.
Your background plate is your Bible. For any questions you have, such as the color, direction, and softness of any shadows, you should look to the background plate first for answers.

Thank you both for the advice!
I already thought of putting dust and stuff underneath, but i'm not that far at the moment! This was just an early test!
The thing with the sky is, it will be replaced by a pale yellow one! So that's why i used some yellow lighting!
I'll also try to imagine i'm the bottom of my ship :p
I'll post some images later on!
