I'm a beginner and this is my 3rd head.
Guess its decent enough to show ;)

Made in 3ds Max 5.
'Translucent' shader was used.
Textures in Photoshop, from various pictures etc.
Shag-hair for hair.

Looks really good!!!! Great skinning work. the only crit i have is that the hair is all really linear looking. All really straight. I think that you should make a few hairs a lil bit curly and some go off course some.

great work

Looks a little too symetrical.
You need to make one side of the whole thing a little differant from the other.
Its just too perfect you know...everyone(and I dont care how great looking they are)has a nonsymetrical look and shape to their head,face,mouth...basically everything.

Other than that small thing...Its looking very cool.

Thom Yorke?

You forgot the lazy eye

Looks good .... I agree about the hair and symmetry though.

Also, take a look at the neck. It seems to 'straight' and needs to bow out toward the bottom more.

Otherwise, looks good! 8-)

Ya....never paid any attention to neck, it is just hanging there for name sake :p
But dont know any Thom Yorke. No particular reference was used.
So doesnt matter really.

How did you do the bum map for the skin undulations? Im skinning a head at the moment myself and a struggling with a way of creating realistic skin undulations. I know Maya supports bromean (I think) textures which can be edited and baked to produce a good starting point, however, max does not and the noise map can't really be modified enough to produce something good.

I suppose I could always paint each little pore - AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH:thumbsdow

A good pointer to a tutorial would be priceless (one that isn't the exceptional but nigh on maya specific tutorial made by the very talented julian g).

face is way too wide...narrow it a bit more.

Well mattowens, I used the lazy tech of making a bump map out of diffuse texture map itself....with some modifications -
- erase the areas where I dont want bumps/or makes ugly streches (like ears)
- erase spots etc
- select small areas on map which produce nice pores in test renders and copy-paste-rotate-flip-scale them in new layers over various parts of the face as required, and erase edges to blend it

Dont use noise as pores are not uniform over the skin, and for lips a photo is ideal.

vizion, I kept the jaws intensionaly wider than normal, wanted more 'macho' types

i think the ears need texture. they look like plasticene.
not as textured as the face though.
but very Phat non the less!

Very nice, me likes!

I also think that the head is a tad wide, the hair is a bit too linear and the ears need a bit more texture work, they seem a tad plain compared to the rest of the head.

Modelling looks nice too, how long have you been modelling? and how much texturing have you done before?

BTW, it kinda reminds me of Chris Tarrant, he plays for Collingwood Magpies in the Australian Football League (AFL).

Thanks, keep it going. :)

I liked the texture for the face very much. It's quite hard work there. Very nice work.

Just 2 things though : how about thinner the ear a bit and also change the eyebrow style to more normal way...

Everything else is great to me!

Almost a year on and off. So you can guess I didnt texture a lot of models yet. :p But I'm a conventional artist and it helped a lot.

Glad you guys liked it, it has many defects though. I realised now that the face is bit V shaped bcoz of working in only front and side views(if you know what I mean). So looks bad in perspective. I rendered it in user ortho view - thats why looks too wide !!

The ears had tex, which I erased. It was streaching badly. May be in next model.....Thx a lot.

Thx razzi,
Ya the eyebrow.....result of tweaking only one model hair for each :D
Reason - too many shag-hair brings my P4/2G to a halt. May be I should use a combination of tex and shag next time.

Great job dude!

One thing I noticed a problem with the hears. Usually hears start from the bottom of the nose(you got that), but they finish at the eye level, your's go too high.

Speaking of the ears, aswell as the texturing comment someone else made, I personally think the ears look too chunky and stick out too far. Ears are actually quite delicate constructions and yours look like they belong on a much more ogre-esque (is there such a word?) type character. Good work up to this point though. Keep the updates coming.

Exactly!...the problem is in the ears...the lack of the external labyrinth looks rare. For the rest is a great work.

3thumbs is right, heads to wide, bring in the sides, i think that'll help alot, and don't worry you'll get faster

OMG!!

Where's this dude's forehead??

Seriously, nice texture job, but the ears bug me and the head is a bit too round and wide.

I love the sweaty look you've got on him, usually it just turns out plastic-y instead of wet.
I do think the bump map is a little too strong in some places and the eyes seem a little dull.
I think the rest is already covered, again: great texturing

NIce model and textures just tweaking needed

Make the ears smaller there too big and he look like a Monkey !

Great job on the texturing. The modeling is fairly good, however, the head seems to be too round. While the skull can be simplified as round, it has a lot of planes to it. This seems to be lacking skull structure, as it is almost perfectly round in certain areas.

Great job on it. Very impressed with the textures.
