View Full Version : Keeping the control rig in place?

I'm trying to animate something in place that has forward translation data on it, that I want to keep. Normally I would counteranimate the root on a layer to keep it in place but the clip has acceleration so that won't work here.

Of course there is "in place" mode on the Character which the five of you who read this subforum surely know, keeps your skeleton in place while your control rig very helpfully runs right away from your character and off your screen, making selecting FK bones a real hoot.

Is there any reliable way to keep the skeleton and the control rig temporarily in place without destroying the Z translation data? And what the #&@ is the point of "In Place" mode if not?

Kia-ora mate ,

Im not sure about a temporary way to keep your control rig in place , but we used to cut the Z data and paste it onto a marker\null before plotting to a control rig , then edit what we needed to , and after plotting back to the skeleton adding it back again . It is by no means a perfect solution and can be problematic especially if the character isnt moving in a straight trajectory ie straight down Z or worse zig zaggin, but in some situations it does atleast allow u to edit most of your character in place , however you may need to plot back with the z trans for a final polish .. probably nothing new to ya , but thought id add my 2 cents. :) ,, oh and If you find a perfect solution .. please let me know ! :)

Hey Jensky,

Thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't thought of doing it that way, though it does sound a bit risky especially if using IK keys and such. I guess for now I'll keep at it with "in Place" mode and hope that enough people bitch and moan to Autodesk that they'll eventually fix this.
