hi, fairly new to max and have just discoverd advantages of the edit poly conversion, such as being able to select loops. ive always gone through and selected each edge, but once i finaly thought i found something magical, it turns out whenever i move around edges/extrude, etc the renders look faceted. why is that, it never happend w/ editable mesh, this is so annoying someone please help.

It could be that you just didnt turned on the proper smooting groups (Editable Poly->Polygon SubObject mode->Polygon Properties rollout)

On the other hand, extruding you create extra polygons. So the problem could be because you've created "laminar" polys that simply won't smooth out - this is a probem in the geometry and should be cleaned out - deleting the extra polygons and eventually welding the vertices

To expand on Begemot's reply, the new polys from extruding have no smoothing applied by default. The easiest way to resolve this is simply to select all the polys (Ctrl+A), and then click a smoothing group on the Polygon Properties rollout.
