hi all,
this is my latest image. it started out as a study of the human face, and later evolved to this.

I really love this. Nice job, his suit seems a bit....stiff and not very flexible, but that isnt your focus anyway.

yes, you might be right there about the costume. but I wanted to make something really simple(no wrinkles and such) to not take away the attention from his face. I might fix it later someday though, I've had my own doubts about it. thanks for the input!

Virtuoso, thanks mate! it's really fun to take a turn from your usual style, there is so much things to learn in the other styles. and it's really fun to swim in unknown water aswell, gives you more inspiration for the other stuff later.
the face is a kinda mix from imagination and reference, I used this pic as a start
ref pic (http://www.fellah.net/temp/Ref1.jpg)
then I went on and tweaked..

Howdy Fellah :)

I like it very much, I'm too studying head (how very original of me), I'm impressed by your rendering/lighting skills. Could you give a few expanations on your light rig and render ?

Congrats, Facial.

sure, but it's nothing revolutionary.
it's just 1 HDRI mapped on a sphere, with radiosity set to 2 bounces, and RaysPerEvaluation to 2x6(it's really enough with 2x6 if you have 2 bounces(and shading noise reduction), it gives you a nice irregularity to imo. I played around alot with the size/contrast/brightness/rotation of the image to, to get the lighting where I wanted..
then another important thing is, instead of specularity on his face, I used softed reflections. determined with a specularity map, but used in the reflection channel instead.. I didn't raytrace these reflections, as that took way to long to render. they are just made up from the same HDRI as I used on the sphere to calculate the GI, but instead putted in the "Env tab"(surface editor) to Spherical Map, and reflection blurring turned up to something around 85-95%..(different for the lips, less there..)
btw, the eyes has raytraced reflections though..

uhm, I don't know what more I can say.. :) except that it lies alot in the textures to. especially the subtile things.. I made alot of testrenders and tweaks to the textures, aswell the materials.

if you want to, I can send you the lighting setup, and the macro I used on the image after render, aswell as the render before the post processing. I think you will learn more from that then reading what I just wrote, alot is actually in the PP as you will notice.

gj first of all, but I think that you should work a bit more on the hair, it doesn't work for me nearly as well as the rest of the model -the suit of course.
