This is the biggest load of BS I have read in a long time! First of all the issue is with the Mother not paying attention to her daughter, it's not what WAS the mother doing while not paying any attention to her daughter. What if she had been playing Monopoly instead? Would the headline read -- MONOPOLY ADDICTION CAUSE OF MOTHERS DISTRACTION -- This is bad journalism as well as a case of a curious little girl who had the miss fortune of playing in the wrong car. Blaming a so-called "'Addiction' to computer fantasy game" for the incident won’t solve anything. It will however piss off a whole bunch of EverQuest players and Sony Entertainment. The problem is not the game it is the parent.

A little common sense would go a long way in this sick country.

Like I have said before awhile back in another post like this, that this is a serious issue. This particular case is very sad, but I think is an extreme.

Well you will probably get a one sided argument on a forum like this, (because it is the internet), people that are lonely, have relationship issues, or just spend an un healthy amount of time on the computer get addicted to an online life and neglect real world responsibilites.

I know people that are addicted to interent ucker of all things, that spend all their time on the computer, they don't do anything else including get a job or make a living and just spend all their time on the internet, because they have told themselves it's important what they do.

It's a serious issue, because we probably all know someone that spends to much time on the internet, and these online games just contribute to people throwing away precious time they have, and spend all their time playing everquest, Star wars, and other Online RPG's.

The game makers contribute to this, by making there games never end, by playing people online, and it's just a vicious cycle, you spend all this time playing a game day and night, and for what? It's not like it's a sport were you can get payed, or at least if you play real sports you are active and getting healthier.

Stories like this will keep happening and get worse once games get more immersive... Reminds me of the movie Strange Days, it was a great movie, and well ahead of it's time.

Go rent it, you will know what I mean :)

As far as I can tell from the article, the "parents" should have got their priorty's straight and spent more time with their daughter than some childish game.

I have no time for those who couldn't give a crap about their own flesh and blood.

is this a case of negligence or of negligence due to addiction?

either way its the mother's fault, but addictions do strongly effect a persons will so the investigation should give some attention to that perspective.

sad really, being addicted to a computer game, but this will only get worse as computers and games become even more widespread and the current generation ages and joins her ranks. addictive games esp. online ones sell more copies, so its an effect game companies should be highly interested in capitolizing on.

A lot of people spend too much time in pubs and clubs too.

But that's not new enough for headlines.

This really is the age of scare monger news reporting.

This is down to the fact the mother not paying attention to the child, if it was not a video game it would have been somthing else. It's a just real shame

I still think people should have to get licensed to have children!!!

I also agree.:hmm:

I love hanging out online every day, all the time! I should neglect my responsibilities so i can spend more time there! Simply brilliant logic....

i think this is one of those, "what actually killed? the bullet, the gun, or the shooter?" Its real easy to say, "ahh this is bulls**t, the parent wasnt responsible.. which is true, of course its true.. But she was playing a game that sucked her in and she zoned, so yes it was the game as well. Did the game kill the child, of course not, the mother did.. was the game responsible for the mothers lack of attention, yes.. what do we do about it? i dunno and im not sure it matters.. it was a tragedy.. think this is bad, wait til they start tapping straight into the brain.. MIT guys dont think its that far away.. oh boy....

They state in the article that the mother had a record of ill-supervision of her children before the child's death...therefore - going by what the article says - the warning signs were already there. Maybe the social services are at fault...

Then again, from what I can gather here in the UK, a social worker works roughly 14 hours a day, has more work than ILM has in a year, and is very much under-payed...

I still say that the parent is at fault - it was her decision to bring a child into this world, and that is a responsability that cannot be ignored.

I agree with that statement..

Hear about the memeber of Phish beign charged with child endangerment.. what I want to know is who brings a small child to a gratedead concert!!! Anyway the fater is a memeber of the Hell's angels so I guess that explains that. Instead of charging the Phish guy they should charge the parents with endangerment as well.. anyway it has been settled out of court.

FOOD ADICTIVE PERSON DIES OF HEART ATTACK

It happens all the time that people suffer for various SOCIAL reasons, and they find something to remove that suffering for a short time. Some people eat, some watch porn, some get angry and hit things, some draw, some play music, some play video games, etc. Anything that helps us get out of depressive moments has a savior-like effect on the person and therefore that person will most likely view this help as the quickest and most effective way to stop the suffering.

Which clearly shows that the problem is not what the person uses to reduce his suffering but the cause of the suffering itself. So simple that any journalist or anyone else who ignores that point deserves a punch in the head.

That is a joke right? I mean, i can see where you want to go with that but its just rhetoric. How could you really get licensed to have children?

Seems like its always "somebody else's fault" nowadays. No one taking responsibility for their own actions. Lock her up.

People are responsible for their own actions...

If you decide to have children then you better be ready to spend the next 18 years raising them properly...that's the sacrifice you make, and thank god a lot of people know and understand this, but there's always a small group that is totally off this world (socially) and thinks that somehow by doing something (having children, getting married, take your pick) everything will magically turn out better...

just my 2cents...

if this mother was a crack-whore and was shooting up in the basement while the kid died, we would of never heard of this story cause that's not "news." but since a video game is involved, the one sided, faceless, only reporting what they want, media will report this with big fat letters across the front page saying to “stop all video games cause there made by Satan”!

i hate the news, the reporters, and even those guys up in the traffic helicopters. personally, cancel all news shows and replace them with reruns of Charles In Charge [at least we will learn something from that].

Umm...I think the point was that the kid died because her mom was playing a VIDEO GAME. We all know that drugs are horrible and if the mom had been drinking it would be the same, but the point is that the mom couldn't handle playing a VIDEO GAME.

The fact that this woman went against all maternal instinct and left her daughter to die in a car so she could play a game is INSANELY absurd, and THAT is why they are reporting it.

If a person let their kid die cuz they were in a "jack" booth in a porn theater or in a church confessional, it's still news either way.

Tex3D, i was talking more about how the media jumps at any negative video game press, not comparing gaming and drugs.
