For the "Rocks and Plants" material, make sure the underlying bitmap node has linear interpolation set on. It looks like one of the bitmaps is causing the pixelation

where do i set this?

- Enter the function editor for the rock and grass material
- Find the Projected Texture Map node
- select it and set the Interpolation drop down to bi-linear

okay. I will try that out and report back.

Looks like it's already set to Bilinear, anything else i can do?

Can you save the scene file somewhere and I'll take a look at it. Something in either your material or your terrain heightmap is causing the pixelation

Sure. I'll upload it to rapidshare.

Here's the render. I'm not seeing any artifacts. I used Vue 7 Infinite build 42554. I see that you are using a bitmap for the procedural mountains. It might be that the procedural terrain is not at a high enough quality. Try setting the proc terrain quality in the terrain editor to 0 and/or increasing the resolution from 256 to 512 or even 1024. Nice scene file by the way.

Thank you.
Well, if you wouldn't mind. Try moving the camera down to the light portion of the snow, around a cliff. See how the snow looks close up.

Okay, after plyaing with your scene file the problem is not with the material textures but the use of an 8-bit bitmap for the procedural terrain. Normally, if you want to create a procedural terrain driven by a heightmap, you should use a 16-bit format image. I took your terrain hieghtmap and converted it to a 16-bit image and then added a bit of gaussian blur in photoshop. If you used a terrain program to create the heightmap, try saving this map as a 16-bit, uncompressed tiff.

One other thing that I forgot to metntion. You can use 8-bit heigtmaps on Standard Terrains with reasonable effectiveness. Standard Terrains in Vue use a fixed resolution and are better suited for heightmap usage versus Procedural Terrain which have unlimited resolution.

But if you look at the 16 bit one that you posted. I don't have the crisp mountain look.

If you want crisper details then output the map as a 16-bit image from whatever program you used to generate the map (Geocontrol??) and apply it to a standard terrain. Also, you should use the material bump channel to add high frequency details. I'll post a test render in a bit to show you what I mean.

Alright. Yes I use Geocontrol. I swear I exported as a 16 bit TIFF. Oh well. I'll try it again.

k I figured it out.
Turns out. It was a 16 bit TIF. however, in Geocontrol I saved it as a 1024x1024 terrain size., and in Vue I had it set to 4096x4096.
So I saved a new TIF 4096x4096 lol 32MB, however BEAUTIFUL quality. So thanks for the tips and help mate!

Gld you got it working. Here's a quick render of your scene using a 16-bit heightmap on a standard terrain with a dynamic eco:

Nice!
Do you have msn by any chance? would be great to have a mentor or just a person that I can turn to help. So we don't clutter the boards :D

Actually, the best base place to go for this kind of back and forth is on Cornucopia3D. There are lots of people on the forums there that are quite helpful for people starting out with Vue.
