I modelled this little guy during the last 5-6 evenings.
Itīs Max5.1, about 1.3 million faces, rendertime about 1 hour (1 Ghz, 256 MB Ram :annoyed: )
Hope you like it!
EDIT: I added some wires on page 4, 5 and 6 of this thread.
EDIT: Added a new, slightly different version with a shiny metal for the mechanics. Which one do you prefere? :

Holy crap man can we see some closeups? Especially the hooks near his "eyes" and the legs do interest me. And a wire... please? Very very good scene, very detailed.

@Garma & Zag: Iīm actually quite glad that my old PC did THIS render, so I donīt have any more views at the moment. Iīm at work now, but tonight I can certainly get a wireframe and some closeups ("head", legs, whatever..) rendered. There are actually a lot more details underneath the shell, the whole mechanic parts are attached to each other. Maybe Iīll remove the shell (do you say that? shell? Sorry, German :) ) and post the raw mechanic parts tomorrow. Letīs see what my PC says :annoyed:

I have seen many different variations of machined creatures, varying from different styles, but this one in particular works perfectly in portraying what I feel would be how a mechanical scorpion would look like. The way the outer body layer curls over the machinery below, stretching out beneath the legs to form the structure is something to be admired.
Perhaps if you added a darker background with various lights surrounding certain areas of the body, it would give the model a sense of depth. Of course this is only a suggestion.
The model looks digitally painted with a wacom, rather that an actual model, which to me is a good thing. I feel it adds to the picture, with that slight etches to the colour.
The model has been constructed very well, so theres nothing more to say other than good job.

really nice stuff u got there m8! Things that might improve the pic could b to try and up the contrst between the scorpion thingie and the white BG, it kinda melts in to much now I think. The shader u used for the brownish metal looks realy cool :) What app did u use for this?

I know, most Scorpions do. I had some Reference-Photos of 8-legged and 6-legged scorpions and made sth like a compromise and changed one pair of legs to those little "hooks"-things at the front.
@H3rbie: I used Max5.1 for modeling and rendering. The metall is basically just a simple prozedural steel material with glossy reflections and a very fine bump-mapping, specular mapping and a high-res environment-map.
@MVP: Yes, Iīm going to render some closeups and wireframes, propably tonight.

@Incrediblah: Not yet, no. Iīve ordered a new PC (really good machine :) ) and I might try to animate it, my old one wonīt do it. Donīt know, I might even have to change some details to get it moving, although I tried quite hard to get it as functional as possible :shrug:
@phoenix: As soon as I have the time for it, Iīm still at work, the model is on my PC at home.

btw, correct me if i'm wrong, but the two pincers are transformed legs (same thing for crabs), hence this scorpio does have 8 legs..

Amazing work there Banshee. Abesolutely amazing.
Sometimes it truly suprizes me, taht people with a relative low hardver config can model in a such detailed manner. I've got a much better PC back home, and I still never had the patience, and skills to complete such a high detailed thing. Man, that scorpion looks really like 1.3 million polygons, not like some other scenes I saw somewhere, where the polycount was just about the same or higher. Nice job.
Now, I'm really keen on some closeups, really on the mechanical design of the legs, recently I studied artificial insect desingns in real life, and I'm really interested on how did you built it all up. Would it be really able to move, or to stand on it's own legs. Really.
Nice job, wonder if I'm ever going to be that patient and talented to do such shocking models. :buttrock:

Last night I tried to get some proper, neat renderd Wireframes done, but for some reason my PC crashed every single time. I still got an older Version (unfortunately without some of the major interior mechanical parts) that I could upload if you want to. Just ask :)
Nevertheless, I got some Screenshots, untextured Versions and some close-ups of some of the front mechanical parts etc.
I wonīt give up rendering the complete wireframe again, please be patient :)

Hey! Good news (for me at least..)
I got my new PC today :)
Itīs a 2.6 Ghz with a Radeon 9800 and 1 GB RAM.
So I have to install everything tonight (and propably tomorrow) and then Iīll render this little guy in High-Res (8000x6000 for print ,just for myself of course, nothing special).
It will be really cool when I donīt have to wait ages after each mouse-klick or command anymore.....
Thanks to all again who wrote something and gave their comments. It was very encouraging!

Oh, I forgot to answer some questions, sorry :rolleyes:
I do appreciate your c&cīs and I try to answer all of them, shame on me if I forget someone.
@VizStorm: Yeah, quite bright :) But that was intended. I even put some rim-lights with a very light, white volume-light behind the model to get these "glowing" edges. I wanted it to be that way to achive this kind of painted, airbrushed look.
@phonic: I havenīt planed to put it into an environment. The reason for this is simple: First of all, I simply wanted to present this model as a stand-alone model without anything around, so the eyes canīt get distracted by "unneccessary" stuff. You know what I mean? My english isnīt the best...
Secondly I personally love this style - just one Object, Character or what ever centered, drawing all the attention on itself (typical: Iīm an advertising-student :rolleyes: )
Third: I wanted to have a decent Wallpaper for myself :p
@robcamp: Yes, 5-6 evenings. When I come home from work I normally relax for about half an hour, call my girlfriend and then start maxing. I need this! Then my head just gets empty again and I can concentrate on sth that I like and donīt have everydays work in my head...
I think I got this done in 5 days because I knew exactly where I was going. I had my reference-photos, I knew how the mechanic had to look like.. The materials were created within 2,3 hours.. so I didnīt lose too much time.

Anyway: Here is the promised Wire-Frame (unfortunately without some of the cables!! The missing cables (a lot of them actually...) were all nurbs. Doesnīt Max render Nurbs as Wireframe?
Oh yes! And Iīve updated Page1 of this thread. I rendered a slightly different version last night with my new PC (in only 9 minutes!! Yeeha!) and changed the material of the mechanics into a shiny, black/dark metal.
Please comment on that, which material do you like more? Itīs important for me as Iīm going to render it in Poster-size next week...

I normally like to see a finished piece b4 I submit it to the gallery, but there's always a few of you that have such an eye for detail (such a wurp) that I can't let it go :) The scary thing about this scorpion is that it actually looks mobile. Very nice work with the tiny components, believe me it was worth it! Now animate him :)

I think the difference between the Pic in the Gallery and the updated version (with the shiny metal parts) is not too big - although it seems that everyone prefers the newer version but as itīs on page one of this thread I think itīs ok like it is now :)

@redbear: Wireframe is easy: Group your model, apply a white material to it.
Make a copy of the whole group, add the "push" modifier (small value, about 0.5 % here). Apply a wire-material to it. Done :)
The surface is easy to make. Simply take a metall-material, give it a nice environment-map. Then go to the bump-channel and add a mix-map. In both slots you put a noise map with high tiling values (for exapmple 0,1000,0 in the first, 1000,0,0 in the second) That gives a 90 degree brushed-metal-Pattern.
Or you take several noise maps and turn and rotate them slightly until youīre satisfied. Thatīs what I did here, 3 diff. Noisemaps with slightly different angles. Done ;)
