These are some trading card illustrations I made for the Shadowfist game. All Painter 7, Photoshop and a Wacom.
You can find more on my website.

Very nice, love em. Shadowfist, I'm not familiar with that one.
08-20-2003, 09:35 AM
hey - what kind of card game is that anyhow?? wonderful art
08-20-2003, 05:02 PM
Anyway, Shadow is a trading card game, kinda like Magic The Gathering, but it's like "Hong Kong action films all rolled into one" to paraphrase its description.
Here's another piece:

SWEET! I love your art! I especially like the first and last!
08-20-2003, 06:05 PM

Great works dude!
But I think I gotta point out, the 1st guy's muscles - praticularily the shoulders, aren't quite right. The styrations are running the wrong direction. Very distracting in an otherwise great piece...

OW you worked on Warlands, for dreamwaveprod.com dude your tuts are great...
ps: make more :D
08-20-2003, 10:27 PM
Awesome use of colors... You sure know 'em. Great contrast too, not to mention lighting.
08-20-2003, 10:53 PM
Dargon: Mhh... now that I look at it... I guess, yeah... oops!
hanzo: Yes, Warlands was a great experience, the art was getting rave reviews, but the story sucked :( As for my mind... yes.. twisted... I have been told many times... eh eh... (maybe you visited my website and saw my demon drawings?).... I'll do some step-by-step tutorials on how I made some of these pieces.
PokeChop: Who's gonna win? I bet the cyber-moneky will finish the robot by ripping it's other eye out and then push it off a cliff.
manosteele12: Oh, I can explain. Let's see, I used Painter 7 to actually paint most of what you see there, but then I relied on photoshop to optimize several things: luminosity, color balance and saturation, and also to add subtle effects (ie. glow). Photoshop also was great in helping me fix smal details here and there and to quickly add textures in certain areas (ie. the wall behind the big guy). I will write a tutorial on the process I used for some of these pieces soon. Thanks for the interest!
markbones, igorstshirts, Prs-Phil, onlooker, rayzv, Gotham, CB_3D, lala7, KWAK, mage111 : Thanks!

Beautiful work! Its great to see art like this on a large scale, since I'm used to viewing it in a little 2 x 2 box on the back of a piece of cardstock. Fantastic imagination, creativity, and technical expertise are demonstrated throughout.
08-21-2003, 12:51 AM
Yikes....nice stuff. :applause:
08-21-2003, 12:59 AM
youre so talented :D
i do have some crits tho. the 1st image, the man's head near the top seems crooked or uneven by the angle his sunglasses and nose sit at... i dont know if im making any sense, it just seems that it is
the second pic, the wires out of the bot seem just placed and not really that they were a part of the bot. doesnt seem natural that those wires were outside the casing of the bot and we cant see any other wires, ... I don't know.
other than that small blather, haha, its great! Awesome stuff.

I love especially the mad scientist.
08-21-2003, 07:17 AM
Everybody: Thank you all for the nice words and the 5 stars!
starqueen: Yeah, the cables... I guess the Moneky pulled them out from deep inside the bot? Ehm.. lame excuse I know.... I just liked having them coming out of it, they added a slight organic feel to the robot (ripping off veins.. fibers... ouch) that I hoped would have made the image look more dramatic.
Anyway, I wanted to share some of the original sketches I had submitted for approval during the initial stages of this commission. These very rough sketches were done in about 1 hour each, on painter. See below:

Dude! I remember playing Shadowfist years ago with my friends. It was a kick ass game. We stopped playing after awhile when we couldn't find anywhere to buy the cards locally any more.
Your art fits that universe perfect! It’s awesome!
08-21-2003, 06:37 PM
You're enormously talented ,Rob.
I love the lighting in mad scientist...Very sci Fi feel to it.
The robot Monkey Reminds me of Frank Frazetta's work......The same energy and the unpredictability.
08-21-2003, 08:37 PM
Great work. Lightning in these pictures is very good
08-21-2003, 09:24 PM
Looks nice! That monkey really reminds me of a Digimon though...That one with Datamon...
08-22-2003, 02:57 AM
Nice painterly feel to the work - solid use of colour gradiants
08-22-2003, 09:56 AM
It amazes me that you guys can paint like this using a Wacom...
08-23-2003, 01:51 AM
What two plugs weren't good enough for ya? You had to take an award also :p Love your painterly style Rob, you always seem to capture that excitement in every stroke. I would agree with Dargon on the shoulders tho, but amazing work.
