View Full Version : Evil woman
TBart 11-27-2009, 11:26 PM I rarely post my work, but I would like some feedback on this wip since I almost never do 2D. I don't really know what I'm looking for, just anything that comes to your mind.

I like that this is grayscale, this is going to be a powerful piece when it's done.
Heres my critique:
Since your title is Evil Woman I would suggest making some of her features sharper maybe? Higher more angular cheek bones, some brave/ bold highlights in the hair to make it pop. Evil characters even if they are female look "harder" I my opinion - harder but not masculine.
Also, her eyes look like they're down I would experiment with adjusting her eyes to look directly at the viewer, like a challenge. Pupils tend to be smaller vs. dialated to make the character look more like a threat.
Great job so far! I'm glad you posted this.

Thanks for the feedback, it's so hard to get good critiques.

Well, here is an update. I tried to make her "harder", and added more detail. I'm worried that I'm losing the dark mystery feeling I had before, but I'll see what others think. I also don't know if I like the hair; seems a little too prom like to me.

Haha, that's probably not a coincidence. In fact, I named my file "Morrigan" because I wanted to create a dark female character. I guess it's not surprising though, it's a generic pretty female face. It's how they say more attractive faces are more "average", so similarity is bound to happen. I can honestly say that I didn't use any reference photos (or screenshots) for this piece though.

I think I like this hair better. I'm not totally set on the clothes, but so far it's what I like best.

Well, my girlfriend said the long hair made her look too masculine, so here's another style. The hair is all rough and just blocked in, and I also worked on the neck and chest so I can rough in other clothes to see how much skin I want to show. I don't know, I can't make up my mind, so any feedback is appreciated.

So, I resized the canvas and did some really sloppy coloring. The red around the neck will be a wreath of roses.

Alright, I got some feedback from a person and that person doesn't like it. What does everyone else think? I'm getting a little fed up with this piece but I don't want to abandon it, so any feedback is appreciated as I finish it.

Here's a lesson to all of you. Check your proportions. I assumed they were ok without ever actually measuring, and after continuing to render the face it became obvious something was wrong. I think it was fine for a more cartoony look, but not for what this piece is turning into. Anyway, here's another update. It looks quite a bit different because I begrudgingly decided to use references for the face. Nobody in particular was used, just multiple non celebrities, so hopefully it doesn't resemble anyone too much.

It looks MUCH better now. :) but although it looks more realistic, the expression was lost in her face from the previous one. Tweek her face a bit perhaps to make her facial expression look more "evil", cause right now she looks almost concerned or deeply concentrated on something.

Thanks for the reply. I agree that she has lost the evil look, but I'm kind of liking the concerned or deeply concentrating look that came out of it, and I would like to stay flexible with how it turns out. I guess I don't really want make direct eye contact, and the clothing isn't really working for me either. So, we'll see what happens this week, which probably won't be much because of Christmas.

I love her face, it is looking great. have u thought maybe of doing it as a 3/4 pic? that way you can do something with her hands / body language and give her more personality. What kind of background are you planning on doing? What is the character history. Plot all of this out before you do her outfit, make her fit into her environment :) Keep up the great work!
