photoreal? maybe maybe not who knows! ok first off a reference image

http://www.matthewdickinson.com/files/car/mclaren_1.jpg

the LM is a rarer version of the F1 to my knowledge it only comes in this plastic yellow (tho i may be mistaken) slight body differences etc etc

modeled and rendered etc etc in XSI (3.01)

info: scene is lit with 3 area lights using the uffozi hdri map for reflections tho only as a jpg as hdri blows out to much. am currently working on the interior and the engine (yes u can see it!), ive hand drawn the tyre treads so they are accurate to the real tyres exactly! (yah boring i know) people seem to like it alot so thought id post it up! c&c welcomed

dang, i wish i could model like that...I dont understand how to do that. what methods did you use for the body of the car?

btw, im not sure what an f1 looks like, but the rims look a little offset inside the tires in the composition.

lol thanx :) how do i do it? free time! to much of it sadly, its all plain poly modeling sub division level of 2, started at the front and modeled my way back lol wire of the basic shell

Great model! But it won't look photoreal until you've put it in a photoreal environment! ;)

update excuse the lack of other things i forgot to toggly there visibility anyways tightening the line sbout 50% done on the seams also tweaked the shader so it looks more realistic and more arange

stay tunned for a close up :)

I love it when people put up the wireframe version of the model.
I wonder if you'll get a much more photorealistic render with HDRI. If it blows out too much, maybe you can try something other than the uffozi image.

Good model good textures. have you tried to turn down the reflectiveness on the yellow paint. It seem a bit high to me

@meephunter

it isnt too high ;)

Very nice =)

I know its only WIP, however am going to crit this because I know the car so well :P

The front most element of the car (Front Air Intake) is too round in side profile

Front bonnet is too round in the bottom corners

Front bonnet air intake is wrong design

Rear aerofoil support struts are too angled and need to be wider

Side skirt of car needs to be more defined

Wheel shader seems to chrome like. Make them glossy and add a tint of blue

Generally, the LM car is not as reflective as the F1. That photo has been ‘enhanced’ and exaggerated to make the car look attractive

Thats all for now :D

Keep up the excellent work!

Great work.

Pinner has some good points but he seems a little burned. He was the original F1-er after all.

Hmmm - come on guy's who's Mclaren takes the golden challice, after all the models we have seen?

Ofcourse Pinner's is the best in my most humbleist opinion

intesresting points pinner i took the liberty of finding ure post to see what ud done, some nice work there man but ures have some errors too which i see are translateing into ure reply.

first of all to avoid bickering heres a link ive used for some of my references so feel free to check anything i saw back to it

http://www.fantasycars.com/derek/cars/lm.html (http://)

the wheels do not need blue on them thats environment reflection (check the windshield refelction colour to the wheels but same blue) and i have to say the blue alloys ruin ure image :( way to bright blue!

thats my main point but also that ure LM shader seems to be semi metalic which its not

ure right about the intakes mine are too rounded spoiler strust are slightly to angled

new pic of mine

http://www.matthewdickinson.com/files/car/mshade31.jpg

have to say ure F1 is lovely but ure LM needs some work dude, uve not modeled the right hand vent behind the door and uve a petrol cap on either side!

commy - don't be so upset, you can only get better over time.

Like you said, you should 'avoid bickering'. One day you will be great too.

commy

explain frzbee? im not upset i was mearly pointing out some of the guys car is better then mine and some bits arent lol

Which parts of your Mclaren are better specifically?

commy
08-24-2003, 06:32 PM
i dont want to get down to which bits of whos models are better than whose thats not what its about im mearly saying that both models in question have errors and both have parts better than others!

if u disagree im happy to respect that.

nuff said i think

Commy

I'm new at 3D, but I know how reality looks like.
If you compare your model with the real McLaren, you'll notice that the divisions of the body panels are too evident. While the real McLaren looks like one single piece, your model lloks like it's been roughly put together. Try to make it smoother.

And great modelling! Congratulations!

I agree with you entirely, I’m not trying to make an argument here.

I would just like to know, in your opinion, in which points you model is better - as I have failing sight in my left eye and I'm looking at the images next to eachother.

commy
08-24-2003, 08:44 PM
cheers guys ye slots of work to do still, many of the panels do need fixing :) erm poly count ill have to check its prolly fairly high due to tripple edges

frizbee69: in my opinion i think blue tinted alloys are incorrect and the yellow shader is too metalic, also a major vent is missing

which ever model people like is the best for them

what iterations do you use?

commy
08-24-2003, 10:12 PM
1/2 the body shell is 5475 tri's

i use 2 interations

It is very very good! There are some things that need attention, the gaps are still a bit large between body panels, looks like a die cast toy because of the seams. Other than that the only 2 areas that stand out to me are behind the rear wheel (near the seam) and the panel in front of the strake in the door. The panel has a diagonal flat spot the is a bit distracting. Oh and the exhaust looks a bit small in scale. For the rear seam, adding a single edge loop would probably rectify "flattening" the problem. Excellent job, just keep tweeking it!:)
