You shuold start with Opening the script editor and watching the commands that are generated when you preform any task.

You should also take some time to look through the Maya Help Documentation, most all of the MEL commands give a script usage example that you can copy and paste in to the Script Editor to see what it does. This is a really good first step.

I would recomemend that you start your own notebook to write down or log useful scripts, to add printouts of tutorials and the like.

There is also a Maya MEL/C++ Programing Forums under the Maya Specific Application Forum. That would be a great place to start as well if you have any questions.
