I'm have been have losing my side camera for a very long time.
This happens in 4.5 and 5.0 and on every machine I worked on. I'm using an IBM T40p with Windoes XP pro sp1 and certified drivers for the FIREGL 9000. The message I get in the Script Editior says "Warning: Could not find an appropriate startup camera: front. A substitute will be used." This happens when I open a save scene. I will get two front views, one of which replaces my side view.

Thanks,
dpisano

maybe your preferences are corrupt. Move them and let maya recreate a new set and see if that fixes it.

Still happens when I moved the preferences and let maya recreate them. This only happens on save scene, it is all good on new scene.

very easy. You probably saved scene with customed ortogonal camera. You rotated 180 or something like that. New scene is fine becouse its set from preferences. This isnt error. Its only warning that you have kinda other camera. Look to attribute of side or which camera if you dont have rotate 180. It should be 0.

I am having the same problem and none of the given methods of fixing the problem truly fixes the problem.
All of my orthographic cameras, top, front, and side, and displayed as the front camera. I know when this happens, and have a good clue why, but I don't know how to fix it.

I had to import alot of files where some of the files were Z up, and some of the files were Y up. Instead of grouping the files and rotating them, I simply adjusted the settings to be Z up or Y up, respectively.
Whenever I import data and change the up value I end up missing cameras.

All I have to do is use the hotbox and select which camera I want to use. The "four view" box does not work. Every time I exit the four view I have to change each window again.

There has got to be a way to actually fix this problem. I'm sure anyone who has imported files from Studio tools or rhino has had this problem.

sorry, about posting again, but I forgot to mention that when I change from/to Z up, the current perspective camera's pivot point gets lost or something. I can rotate correctly, but it seems that the pivot will not change or changes irradically.
