openzight 08-19-2003, 08:22 PM hi everyone, i'm a novice in 3d, i started using 3d studio max 4 months ago, a can model some objects, but i like to move into the character modeling, i know it's very dificult, but a like to know wich is the best modelling technique for characters and realistic human faces. of course i need to learn mapping and texturing, ilumination, etc.
can anybody recomend me a good book for this, or some tutorials?.
thx in advance ;)

First, read the CGT FAQ (http://www.cgtalk.com/misc.php?s=)
Second, once you've read the FAQ you'll know to be more specific in your Subject Line.
Third, with specific app questions you should post in the appropriate app forum. In this case it will be 3ds max. Nifty, huh!
Fourth, the manuals, help files, and tutorials that ship with max (or order a hard set through discreet, shipping might be expensive to Mars tho'.) are your best friend. Read them, learn them, love them!
Fifth, see my sig below.
Btw, I still can't get over all you folk who pony out huge cash for apps that you don't even know what to do with. *sigh!*.

a good 3ds max book? does one exist ?
yes.
get 3ds max 5 fundementals as your a beginner then buy either inside 3s max 5 or just use maya.
if you dont mind spending $50-$100 on books that are useless after you have read them then theres a few, but i havent found one thats actually worth the cover price and that hasnt been outgrown very quickly...to the novice they look quite broad and deep but once you have covered all they contain you'll see they are little more than polishings of the shipping manuals
use the web, if you really feel the need, buy second hand

I went to my local 75% Off Books and found a few books on max, they were all for previous versions but for $5.00 a peice it s still a steal.

I have a bookshelf FULL of relatively useless 3dsMax books. I don't even think they make the Inside series anymore. What a scam that was - 3 fullprice books that dated very rapidly.
The manuals are great, and the internet is really stuffed full of awesome 3dsMax resources.

The best book that covers all sorts of novice material is "Harnessing 3ds max 5". I think that the perspective that it offers is an excellent complement to the manuals and tutorials included with 3ds max.
