I am on a limited budget...getting a MAC and wanted to know your opinions on the better card to go with for 3D and motion graphics work (after effects).

Radeon 9000

or

GeForce 4 MX

I heard the Radeon 8500 was actually better in many respects than the 9000.

Anyway, just wondering what you recommend.

Thanks!

Nice to hear you switch to the mac :buttrock:
I did the same thing a year ago and i'm very happy about it.

I would suggest to get a geforce titanium if possible, not the mx.
Stay away from the ati since it has alot of driver issues on osx.

Hope this helps out

Yeah, right now I'd say your best bet for Lightwave on OSX is a GeForce4 Ti, which you can find for around $300 USD (last I looked, it may have come down a bit since then.) ATI cards have some issues with Lightwave and the latest version of OSX (10.2.6). I have a Radeon 8500 hooked up to dual 20" monitors, and it performs very nicely. I stuck with OSX 10.2.4, which by general consensus seems to be the recommended OS for using with Lightwave and an ATI card. Like I said, I'm having no problems with my ATI now that I figured out what the problem was...but it can be a pain if you've got programs whose system requirements are something later than 10.2.4, like Final Cut Pro 4 (which I don't own, so luckily I don't have this problem). That being said, if you've got the choice, I'd probably go with the GF4Ti...at least until ATI gets their issues resolved.

i had this same question a week before and some guy told me to get Gefroce quadro or ti series, i choose ti4800 (asus v8460) due to me budget and it runs smoothly with lightwave on my WINXP. NO PROBLEMS OR ERRORS, yet.

Well, the OS in question here was OSX, but from my experiences, Nvidia cards seem to work pretty well with Lightwave regardless of operating system. :)
