View Full Version : Parallax mapping for a render?

I have searched high and low for several hours now for a shader or some tutorials or ANYTHING to help me with setting up a parallax map. I want to use both a normal map and a height map (either in the alpha of the normal or by itself, I don't care) to get the parallax mapping effect but the problem is, I don't want to do this in a game just as a render for a side project. Like I said, I've looked high and low on this forum and all over the googles to no avail. I've found a few things that were promising like ShaderFX (but that only works for creating real time shaders and cannot be rendered) and NodeJoe (doesn't have a Max 2010 version so I can't use that) but they inevitably let me down.

Please can anyone point me in the direction of some good shaders/tutorials for getting parallax mapping into your renders for either Maya or Max?

Fabio Policarpo shares his Relief Mapping plugins for Max 6/7/8/9 here:

He also offers the source if you want to recompile for later versions.

If you get a nice parallax effect via ShaderFX, it's a simple thing to render the viewport display out to image files (still or animated). Check out the Make Preview function in the Animation menu in Max.
