Just to make sure, once and for all: If we install the latest Microsoft security update for the Blaster worm, will it corrupt our current Max files?

I heard this, and want to know if it's true or not. Thanks!

I was talking about the files not working on a computer that doesn't have the security update, and etc...

I am a teacher in a Multimedia college....we have 22 XP computers running Max 3.1. After installing the Blaster update many computers developed corrupt max files. Any max file saved on these machines is now corrupt. The workaround of file merge that worked with the win2000 corruption problem works....but with the added proviso that new files must be saved in an entirely seperate directory to any corrupt files.

Microsoft....you are the bane of my life.:surprised

Please reply if you are having this problem as the blaster update is the only variable I can see that could be the problem.

I thought the files on the patched machines only show up as corrupted on machines WITHOUT the patch but work fine on machines with the patch.

Something like that, yeah.

But I want the exact thing, you know, because nobody seem to be perfectly sure, hehe.

I'm talking about Max 5.1 though.

Microsoft has a beta patch that will take care of it. You have to phone them last I heard.

Wouldn't people without blaster patched need to get patched anyway? Those continuous shutdowns are a drag.

I'm not patched, and don't need to. My firewall takes care of everthing perfectly fine.

A firewall hasn't protected some people from getting it.

Hmmm.

I wonder which firewall they had.

I personally use ZoneAlarm, I think it's great and has blocked 3 infection attempts only yesterday :)

Uppdate all computers and you have none problem with corupt max files.

Oh, the problem is not there.

Much more if I patch it, and want to publish free models on the web, people who are not having the patch won't be able to have them.

Even if you do update all your machines, do you really want "corupt" max files. Who knows what problems that may or may not lead to and then latter if you start to have problems with max and your data files, is it the patch or is it something else.

Personally I use a second comp to connect to the net, sort of a gateway, with private NAT addressing back to my other machines. That net comp does have Win 2k SP4, along with current anti-virus and a firewall, but since I don't use max on it, it doesn't matter.

How ever one thing that does matter is my little dial-up net connection is right now getting bombaded with PING requests, upto 7 a minute from this worm that has got many other pll. So I don't know what you should do, but for gods sake do something!

people just weren't protected by their firewalls because they didn't block the portst the worm uses... a firewall should be enough as long as you don't get the worm from any other source.
