View Full Version : Question of megapixels
PanzerMKZ 11-23-2009, 07:57 PM So I have a question of megapixels. I have an issue of having to upgrade a computer because of dealing with Photoshop. I have a P4 2.8ghz with 2gig ram running XP. Photoshop CS4. Machine bogs when trying to combine pics and such. Wondering what people would recommend as new machine. Camera is a Nikon D3 soon moving to a Nikon D3X.
As a computer nerd this is kinda hard to wrap my head around. The pictures are only 10meg or so.

Look at the minimum/recommended specs for Photoshop CS4:
1.8GHz or faster processor
512MB of RAM (1GB recommended)
That is just to run the application, no processing. You've then got XP plus any antivirus, firewalls, printer software, office applications, software updaters etc. all running, using memory. Then you've got 40-50mb per image plus any processing...chances are that you're running out of memory.
In short, your computer is a bit outdated :D
Pretty much anything will be an improvement to be honest. To get the full benefit go for a 64bit system with as much memory as you can afford as Photoshop CS4 is a 64bit application. Also consider at least a 2nd hard drive to use as a scratch disc in photoshop. The i7 chips offer the best bang per buck currently but any dual/quad core system will help. Faster CPU = faster operations, more memory = larger images without slowdown.
