hi Y all.
I have a nagging question on my mind..'s been there for awhile now.
ok..
i Love game art, and want to break away from my current job in commercials to dive into the game world.
But, I am a lightwave user, and, almost ninety percent of the studios i have seen on the web, or even you guys's pieces show Max or Maya..
sometimes, cinema4d , but , i seldom see any lightwave users in this worl..

so..
Does this mean that i should retrain myself to use Max, or maya?

I'm already a Wings user( do you guys know wings?
a fantastic subdivison modeller, incredible amazing, wowowwoo, insanely cool...hu.. ok, you got it!
lol
anyway..
let me know if i should kick the newtek habit and dive into max, or.. is there still some hope for me ??

(also, i have recently been giving a copy of ANimation Master 2003..
looks pretty cool, but, never saw anybody use it .. anyreasons why??)

well, i would certainly not just dump lw!. dont many large studios give you a range of programs to use?

although, the vast majority of games and studios (to my knowledge) use max and maya, so if i were you i would start learning them (or at least max).

Good luck,

Will

A surprising number use Lightwave quietly, mainly for modelling.

Bungie (Halo), Epic (Unreal), Criterion (Burnout, Trickstyle) all spring to mind.

I don't think it's time to hang up the Newtek gloves just yet, obviously consider what the pro's and con's are before hand but there are games that use Lightwave (Serious Sam) for one and i think it looks damn impressive.

I'm no expert in the area but i can see where you are coming from on this.

Perhaps you might get a more detailed answer from the guys in the Game Art forum or the Modelling Forum.

And yeah we know about Wings :) it even has it's own wee forum in the Application Specific area.

Good Luck anyway and how about posting some of your excellent work :) i wanna see how good this stuff is so i can aspire to be you

well if you are going for gaming then Max has 80% of that market. hope that helps.

thanks guys..
that's what I thought..
i've been looking at studio max recently..

hum...
it's quite a bit different than lightwave..
but,
shouldn't be that hard to figure out.
the stacking system is quite nice actually..
but, the modelling is a bit akward to me right now.
thank god, i can still model in wings and bring it in max..

animation in max, versus lightwave is non comparable.
lightwave's animation is archaic, not very efficient at all.
Max's is nicer for what i want to do..

I'm still having troubles with the boning system in max, but , it comes with good little tutorials..
hum..
at first glance..
between lightwave and Max..
hum..
you know..
It's a hard thing to say, but it does seem that max definitevely has some user friendly quality that you just don't find in lightwave.

But..
the modelling is not quite as nice.
hum.
too bad!

ok.
anybody has great max tutorials on uv mapping, and rigging??

ps ( as soon as i do something nice in Max , i'll post!!!)

Try this tut for max textureing- I found it very informative.

that link does not work..

nevertheless..
Thanks a bunch you guys..
's funny, but, sometimes i read threads and people asking stuff..
they get an answer , maybe not the one they were looking for, but , when they reply to the answer, it is in the negative form!

i can't belive that!

so..
Thanks everybody for all thehelp you are giving, and, I hope to be able to give as much

cheers!
