A couple of simple enhancements that I think would really help Net Render:
The ability to run it as a service, minimized to the system tray.
The ability to activate clients from the web interface.
I am using Net Render across an office environment. Which computers can be used depends on time of day and who is out of the office. It would be great if I could be sure that it was running on all the machines. If it was running in the system tray people would be much less likely to close it. As it is, when I leave for the day, I have to run around to all the machines and make sure it's running.

Also, my boss tends to work later than everyone, but he has a fast computer. To get use of it, I can't start a render until he's gone for the day. If I could reach in later through the web and activate his client, I could get a good head start on the render.

My couple of ideas. Will be sticking them in Maxon's suggestion box... All in all Net Render kicks ass!! :buttrock:

how about adding the ability to render multi-pass images, or is that there, and I just can't figure it out correctly?

I don't know about single images, but it is quite possible to render multipass movies of a scene. Just specify the components, format and filename before you send it to the server.

A little off topic, but does your Net Render cd have installers for both mac AND windows? I received my Net Render module a couple days ago and it only had the windows installer. I thought it was supposed to have both platforms on the 1 cd?

The tech support guy said the same executable would work on both mac and windows. Duhhh, it doesn't. It installed fine on my pc, but the install app is named Installer_NET.exe. The mac doesn't recognize the .exe extension.

Maxon is sending me a new cd. I'm hoping the one I have is defective. If someone could tell me that the cd has an installer for each platform, I'll know that the one I have is defective.

I want to run the server on my slow mac and my client on a relatively fast pc... but without the mac installer, it's useless.

Thank you!

I am not at work anymore, but I am pretty sure that my cd (v7) had both installers. I think it might have even had os 9 and os X installers, or maybe the one did both, I don't really remember. If you are only going to be using one client, have you thought about running the server and the client both on the pc? I think this is a possibility, however I haven't checked or tried because I use all of the departments comps at night for rendering. It is a power trip to add together 16 pc and as many macs both dual and single processors. but that is a digression, I think the cd had all of the necessary installers.

I have the XL bundle for Mac, and the CDs are not dual format for any of the modules - I agree, Net Render should be supplied for both platforms at no additonal cost - I think I might phone Maxon and ask about that actually - at the end of the day, under the XL license you are limited to 3 clients, but it shouldn't matter what platform they are! - this would make my recent thoughts of buying a PC slave as a render box a possibility!

kromekat,

Let me know what you find out if you don't mind... The instruction manual for NR says that it supports "heterogeneous" networks (different OS's). So why wouldn't both platforms' installers be on the disk?

What's really weird is on my temp. serial number sheet, it states "Mod: NET 3 Mac:" So if I only got 1 platform on the disk, why wouldn't it be mac and not windows?

Thanks for the response. :)

dnovotny,

I thought about putting the server and client on the pc, but my C4D application is on the mac. Wouldn't it be better to have the server on the one that has the main app? I should try it anyway.

Thanks for the reply, it makes me more confident that I received a bad cd and the new one they sent will work :wavey:

Sounds like a sweet setup you have there! :buttrock:
