SSS isn't just a lighting technique, it is a phenomenon that occurs in translucent surfaces when lit. So it's not merely a technique that can be achieved by following a tutorial, as real subsurface scattering is actually achieved by complex algorithms, and requires special shaders to apply it to your model.
I think the Brazil renderer has support for it :)

There was a thread on polycount awhile back about SSS. Lots of helpful links in there...

try FinalRender, which i find to be quite an agree-able render solution , or Mental Ray which i believe is the only render solution. they both support SSS. Tom Sporer wrote a little something on the subject and made a scripted shader, and Andy hayes made quite a nice little plug-in for XSI|MR.
im not really all that sure but you should probably be able to find a plug-in for MaxRenderer that may do the trick..... have fun its a great effect.

Does anyone know exactly how it works in Brazil? I've fudged around with it, but i can't seem to get any translucency. The wax shader seems to use SSS, but i wanted to be able to apply SSS to a brazil material.

Okay, i read the tuts that you get with brazil, and they were somewhat helpful on using SSS with brazil. One thing gives me problems, though...
You have to set a thickness that the light will penetrate, since this is what decides how translucent the object or material is. Fine.
Problem is, when i apply the map to my character, i get light seeping through eyelids and corners of the mouth, like someone stuck a candle inside the characters head. How do you avoid this? Obviously i could lower the thickness, but that would make the SSS not happen at all, since i would have to lower it far enough to not go through the eyelids, which are naturally quite thin. So what to do? Do you have to have a closed mesh? Makes testing quite hard when you are still working on other parts of the model!

Does Brazil allow you to mask the SSS effect?

I don't think so. Do you mean with an alpha map?

Yeah. I don't have Brazil, but I would think they would allow something as basic as this...

Since Brazil requires an outputmap in the translucency slot, maybe you could control it by using an alphamask in that slot?
