I have recently made a head in max5.1. The unwrapped mesh is quite dense because there is a mesh smooth on it. I open the edit UVW unwrap and took a screen shot of the unwrapped mesh. But when I pasted it in to a new file in photoshop the resolution is too low to follow the wires and paint accurately.

My screen res is only 1024x768. I want to make a high detailed map, say 4000x4000, how can I get a hi-res version of the wires to work from?

I'm sure it's really simple, but i just couldn't work it out.

Thanks for any help.

Go and find the freeware plugin 'Texporter'

go to this link and see about this amazing bit of kit you can get for running photoshop and max as one with vector uv lines so when you zoom in on the unwrapped mesh the lines will be clear and crisp.

If you can't afford or don't want to buy Ghostpainter2, try this freebie utility...

Thanks a lot guy's I'll have to check all this out when I get in from work. All the solutions sound pretty good to me. I'll let you know which on I go for, the cheapest probably.....Lol. Damn these expensive programes.

Thanks for that, posm.

I ran into a problem with installing, though. Supposed to be able to run "mzp.run" from Max, but my Max was having problems with it. With "mzp.run" open in a text editor, I just drag-n-dropped the files appropriately.

I just tried it real quick like and it seems to work just dandy.

edit:
Oh, man. I just tried it with some other models that I have with multiple IDs and things, and it works like a champ. Definitely a keeper.

Today I have finished a free 3dsmax V5 script to relax UV coordinates. Maybe it helps to improve your UV mapping.

It works on an editable mesh, but after you are done with the UV mapping you can convert it back to an editable poly and have a good mesh smooth.
