Hello.

I'm looking to speed up my conversions to MPEG2 for DVD production. I'm a one-man operation doing educational titles for non-profit. (read: budget)

Moving from a G5 to a Q9550 system has helped this, but I was recently referred to a card at Newegg:

Leadtek WinFast PxVC1100 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815122015)

There is also a software bundled version available with TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress.

Can anyone shed some light on this or any alternatives yielding decent quality conversion?

Thanks!

Steve

There are several software packages that can transcode media with GPU acceleration. Most right now use CUDA but eventually there will be others that use OpenCL and can run on any brand GPU. I think ATI has one that runs on X1000 series Radeon or newer that's free. Cheers!

Thanks.

Unfortunately I have been using an old 7600GT which is not on nVidia's 'CUDA list'.

It has served my purpose for this kind of work, but can not take advantage of the technology you mention.

In light of all this the Leadtek card I mentioned cost about the same as a decent video card for CUDA use.

The card is faster according to Googled sources, but can anyone attest to the quality of the MPEG2 encoded output?

Thanks again!

Steve

The quality of a mpeg2 output is exactly the same as for transcoding the normal way, it is just a hell of a lot faster to transcode over gpu. The more SPU you have available, th faster the transcodinh process.

Take a look at this side for extrem cuda systems.
Here you can find some more information:
