View Full Version : volumetric TV screen
Scott212 08-19-2003, 06:33 AM I'm trying to create the look of a tv screen at night from the side, the way it projects the light and colors into the room.... So far I've mapped the movie to the plane and am wondering how to get the volumetric effect. Any tips?

Better yet - how can you emit light from a surface? I think I can figure out the rest.

I'm not sure how to emit light from a surface, closest thing I can think of would be either placing a spot light infront of the tv facing out, the image sequence in the color channel and animating the intensity of the light, also you can add volumetric fog to it. Might give you some light streaks coming out of the tv. Also maybe an Area light might work. The Area light might need to face at the tv, not really sure. Hope this helps.
i had to do the exact same thing for my thesis project, its a lil complex but since u r not seeing the TV screen its a lot easier. U'd still have to render in layers and take it to after fx for this. Create a spot light inside the TV. Use quadratic decay and crank up the intensity to about a 1000. In light effects check light fog, and in its attr check fast drop off and play with the values. (u may have to break the light connections with the tv screen)
Render out ur scene and ur TV screen in sepreate passes. In after effects u can apply a glow effect for the TV screen the glow type should be alpha, play with values and u'll get a nice glow around the TV.
To the get the flicker of the tv screen - add a strobe light effect in after effects and play with the values and color and voila u have a flickering glowing TV screen.
