View Full Version : Linear workflow with gimp and blender question
handlebar 11-19-2009, 06:30 PM How do i set up a linear work-flow with gimp and blender, i understand the principles but not the execution.
I want to know how to set textures to linear workspace for starters, using the gimp preferably. There's also the question of the color picker in both blender and gimp, how do i work around that. Thanks

Have you read this article? It explains all the steps involved, including info about the colour picker issue. The problem with Gimp is that it does not support 16/32bit colour, though, so you may want to resort to CinePaint, or a different 16bit solution for texture painting.

Thanks for the link, i forgot about gimp not using 16/32bit colour, i've go image editors that can but i want to keep things in Linux so i'll check out cinepaint.

Wouldn't it be possible to do the gamma correction of the textures in blender's compositor then save to a format like .exr?

Hmm, complicated issue. 2.5 has apparently got some form of colour management for linear workflow. I don't know anything about this yet.
It is definitely possible to use the compositor to gamma correct, check out this info:

This tutorial covers the basics:

I couldn't see the specific link, but in the menu on the right of there is a ' Compositor - Gamma Curve correction with Linearized Textures Part 1'

Yes that's possible, it's more painted textures that i'm interested in more than camera data, how to get the best out of them before i render in blender.
@Ian Jones.
Thanks for the links, i haven't seen those videos, i too am curios as to the new color management in blender, if anyone's got some info i'd love to here about it.

You mentioned painted textures. Chances are, the artist painted those textures to "look good" using a gamma-corrected monitor, which means that you should linearize them before doing stuff to them in the compositor. Since not all monitors are calibrated the same, you will need to either find out what his color temp and gamma setting is, or fiddle.

Just remember this all changes, the above info needs revising as the colour management is rolled out in 2.5. You probably already know this, but just pointing it out for readers new to the thread.
