I want to create a scene using Mental Ray which has animation and done on an entirely white background just like in this classic animation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVVVM0t2VOo&feature=related but I am confused as whether to use either or final gatherer with GI or both with an HDRI, whats the best setup for a simple white background animation?

Thanks

One way would be a large, very large, flat white plane with a similarly large flat white sphere enclosing the scene.

Or just render out passes, and composite the whole thing over white.

Your example doesn't appear to need GI specifically. You could do that just fine with FG.

The easy setup is:

A plane for your characters to stand on, Use Background shader on the plane with reflections turned off, and go to your camera and set the environment color to white. Throw in an ambien occlusion or final gather with a white IBL and you are set.
