View Full Version : Fatal Error when loading Maya 4 on XP Pro
Magicman49 08-18-2003, 10:03 PM Hi Guys
I recently purchased a second hand copy of Maya 4 (I can't afford to buy it new), and I'm in big trouble. I've installed everything ok but when I try to run the program, I get a fatal Error message and Maya shutsdown. I can't get a refund because the guy said it worked fine on his computer.
I'm really stuck. I don't know what to do.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
My spec: P3 733
256MB RAM
Voodoo 5 5500
Win XP Pro sp1

Hmm.
I hope that you can sue the guy for what you paid, because you're out of luck. Alias does not acknowledge the right to resell a copy of Maya, and although I think they reserve the right to grant permission for such a sale, good luck getting them to do so.
Unless you're set up for dongle licensing, making it work almost certainly requires getting Alias to issue you a new license file. The original owner is able to request a transfer to a different computer for $150, but the license will still be registered in his name. Alternatively, the licensing scheme relies on the MAC address for the Ethernet card... if he's not using motherboard Ethernet, then maybe you can get him to sell the card to you?
I'd say try to get your money back and buy a new license.

Can we have those fatal Error messages ?
or just "Fatal Error" ? :)

Here is a screen capture of what I see. Just so you know when it happens (if it makes any difference), I double click on the icon on the desktop, the Maya splash screen appears and you can see it loading all the different parts etc.. then when the GUI starts to appear (the 4 view boxes etc) this message pops up:

So is your copy of Maya dongle-licensed then? Otherwise, how did you get it to the new machine?

I don't know... I'm not very computer technically minded. The guy who i bought it from came to my house and installed it. When he loaded it and it didn't work, he said "i'll have to get back to you on that".... only he never did.

If he didn't install any hardware, it sounds like he sold you a cracked version of Maya 4. That sucks! Take him to small claims court.
:annoyed:
