View Full Version : Men Who Stare at Goats - Production Focus
PaulHellard 11-17-2009, 11:32 PM Hey there,
So much stems on the performance and acceptance of CG animals. CIS Hollywood was given the arduous task of creating realistic creatures for this tale of espionage. The whole show balanced on the acceptance of the goat as a real animal. Can you tell the difference?

Ray traced GI lit fur??? I thought cleaver fur people baked hdris out into spotlight domes...or even maybe point based gi. Crazy stuff.

Actually its no real problem to do it in a raytracer(mental ray, vray etc), but it seems quite slow in renderman. Anyway - they obviously had the resources :)
This is inefficient
donīt know, 3 hrs per frame doesnīt seem that much for rendering fur.
maybe they choose ray traced because is a small scene. looks good though.

even though the goat looks good, i see no reason to render that shot with raytraced gi. the same look could be easily achieved with a rather conventional lightrig and shadow maps.

Weird that they wouldn't use point based GI if they had a Renderman pipeline.

Great article. Love the goat modeling, rendering and animation clips. I'll see this movie for sure.
