Hi all

I have set up Net render today on my 2 machines, and all seems to be working pretty much ok - I am rendering an animation, and I want the files saved as TARGA with alphas - this is happening ok, but it's also saving a b3d version of the same frame - why?? - how do I stop this?

:/

I am 99% sure this is it. Once the c4d server program is up and running in the server application go to file > Network Settings. I am thinking you have "Delete pictures after assembling" unchecked. I think you need to check this box and then quite and restart the server app for the changes to take place. It has been a while sense I had the same problem but I think that is what did it.

yes that is the option to stop the NET server from saving the b3d files. this can be a handy thing though in certain instances.

Thanks for the feedback - right - I'll disable that then if they aren't needed for anything. :)

I think this also applies to Iggys "what are *.b3d files ?"
thread. I thought it was a multipass rendering thingy.

yep, I think you're right bob. I disabled the multipass but still saw those files appearing. Dann, can you give a little more detail about how these files could be useful? When might you need them?

Sorry Iggy, I think I can't help you further. No NET
render here. The b3d files are nothing more than
image files and I think you can delete them without
upcoming trouble.

hmm well you see iggy its like this, if you can click fast enough it is possible to make animations using the color channel of an image in Bp3d just kidding I just had to say that.

well say you set your render to save to a jpg format and then after all that processing notice that jpg format left some horrible artifacting. you can just change the setting in the scene file and rerender and it will use all the existing b3d files for the renders new output format.

the b3d is basically an uncompresses (unclamped too i think) file format that has all the complete raw data in it. also very handy if you are silly to render to a .mov format and the render is compressed bad or messed up. just change output again and rerender to reuse the exising b3d again.

I am still uncertain what you mean dann;

Well if you go back and alter the settings, re render, what do you gain from the b3d file?

btw - I followed a thread that lead to your renderking website dann - thats a great service you offer! - I may well be needing that for some forthcoming animations. Am I right in thinking that you hire out a block of time rather than just per job/as long as it takes basis? - I mean I might have some stuff that would only take an hour or 2 on your system, whereas at home, may take a couple of days, and if I have a deadline to meet... do you just charge per rendering hour ad hoc?

that is exactly the point - the b3d files already exist so it is essentially an instant render just having the net server convert to the new file format from the already existing b3d files. (of course this is only good for change in file format type - i have never tried to change say the render resolutions etc)

and yeah i just rent out the 30 day block of time. no hourly or per job billing - NET isn't capable of that precise time recording and who wants to pay for re-renders anyway... : )
