Hi all,

Currently iv been working on some exterior renders, and the more I do, the more I read, the better they get, looking at tutorials and such, a natural advancement but Iv come to a stage now where every change seems to be slight or so minimal it is unoticable to my eye if it has changed at all. The quality of the images lacks a certain photorealistic look and im unsure why ? maybe a few tips that you guys can recommend ?

The images have been produced with Vray and 3D Studio Max, all materials are Vray materials and the scene consists of 1 Vray Sun.

Any Advanced Vray Tutorials you may recommend.

The images have been produced over several years, architecural visualisation is an industry I really wish to progress in, I see lots of photo-realistic images yet i am really struggling to reach that stage.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Craig,

From all the images in the gallery your interiors are your best work.
Your exteriors are not bad work but lack detailed backgrounds, this might help http://3dats.com/Images/Tutorials/A_Little_Background_Information.pdf

What helps renders look more realistic aswell is detail, for exteriors these days you can go alot further in placing of detailed plants, for interiors go a step further then using standard objects you would expect to see.

Hope this helps a little

I agree with copain. Detail is king when it comes to reaching for photo-real. Even very modern and clean architecture requires serious attention to subtle details in the materials and modeling. It takes time to develop an eye for where attention is required. I think we all struggle with that constantly. Here' my latest interior (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=807311) maybe not completely photo-real but getting there. Detailing the objects in shot are what make it a bit more interesting. In this case I create almost everything from scratch but there are many very nice libraries out there now that have natural looking elements to drop in, Evermotion's newer libraries come to mind. That get's you part of the way. After that it's attention to lighting. Try to make the lighting help your render rather than reveal it's flaws. For exterior this can get challenging since your are dealing with daylight. I almost never use a mid-day sun since it can make things blah. Also for interior & exterior consider using Ambient Occlusion passes. Don't go crazy but to bring out fine details and add that natural soft look to object interaction. Detailed plants, skies etc. for exterior are a must as well. Interior, try to use real light data if you can and some form of photographic exposure.
