Its a bit too gentle and innocent for a gloomy or macabre forest.
Hey, it looks very cool. But its just not a gloomy forest. =)

k. was asked to post progress. so here goes.
first sketched it.
http://ambient-whisper.cgcommunity.com/images_dump/Forest/forest-sketch.jpg
laid down some colour.. to get an idea of where to go with the picture, and fill in the piece so theres no white holes.

didnt like the hard look of the above image so i decided to use a chaotic brush and have some fun with it.
http://ambient-whisper.cgcommunity.com/images_dump/Forest/forest-02.jpg
but the above pic looked rather dull, no interesting colours could be found. so i added a little red... and some different shades of greens

Rock and Roll, you still planning on part 2 of this image? that sounds really neat.
Always love to see new work from ya.
its an impressive piece though I would prefer some of the pencils rubbed off cos some of them look like squiggy lines

Wow, impressive work.. Somehow it reminds me of Studio Ghiblis style, Princess Mononoke to be precise.. Anyway, good work!

This one is sweet :)
I love the colours, althought I would like to see higher contrast in few places. For me, this desaturated colour theme works best with details as right now. I'm not sure about colour of those two guys, maybe more into dark red?
This one is great ilustration of Your arguments in this thread  :
