View Full Version : How to get a Beam of Light?

I am trying to get a god ray effect/ Volumetric Light in Maya with Mental Ray. I am doing a beam coming from an alien ship (off screen) and beams alien into my shot.

Hope somebody can help I have first steps going with a Parti_Vol but I don't understand how to use it properly.

Can anyone help?

For a single beam you can use Mayas volume light.

Yeah I have it in a cone and light downward. But its different with when u render? How do you get it to work correctly?

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but here is a link to a quick tutorial. It was done a while ago, and there might be better/more efficient ways to go about it, but it will be a stepping stone at least.

There are a couple ways to do it (parti-vol being one of them, a little more diffucult but still doable). If this isn't what you are looking for, hit back with a reference pic of what you are going for and what you have and I'll see if I can help.
