View Full Version : Polygon Knifing?
geoffb 08-18-2003, 02:13 PM Hello everyone. I have a simple question. I started out using Cinema 4D to learn 3D and have made the move to Maya. Never want to look back, but I need to find out if there is an easier way to box model. Say for instance if I need to add more points to a box for modeling, after I have already started, in Cinema there was a knife tool that you could cut through your object. I love the split polygon tool, but it takes forever, when you are trying to just make one cut, all the way through a cube. Can anyone help me? Is there a tool that I am missing? Or a plugin I can get. Thanks a lot.

Don't remember if 4.5 had it but 5 has a polygon tool called cut faces tool. My luck with this tool is selecting the faces I want then using the tool in the orthographic views.

thanks that should help cut the time in half at least. I appreciate it.

Hi geoffb,
I suggest getting MJPolyTools. It is a nice little suite of tools for enhancing the workflow when polygon modelling. It is available from the 'scripts' section of Mikkel Jans homepage (http://www.maya3d.dk/index.asp).
Have Fun!

I also came to maya from C4D.
I also suggest using the MJPolyTools pluggin. It's not quite like the knife tool in C4D, but close enough.:hmm:

Hey thanks a lot. Nice to know that I'm not the only one who converted.

There are the bonus games tools on a/w's site. They include a nice tool called "draw split tool" that sounds like what your looking for.
