Hey,
so i decided to first start mkaing real guns and then try to make a fantasy gun heheh.
I decided to make a desert eagle.
I need help on where to make hard edges.
Since Goon just told me how to do hard edges a while ago, i still dont completly know how to use it. anyways, pic:

Hey man. First off, I'm not certain what software you are using so that will make all the difference in the explanation. Secondly, you need to add alot more detail. Even for gaming, you can afford more poly so don't be afraid of detail.

Marking hard edges is a technique used when you are adding some form of subdivision. In Softimage XSI, you would use hard edges or crease values when you use Geometry Approximation. In Maya, I believe it is called smoothing. Regardless, knowing what software you are using is important.

From the looks of things, it looks like you are using Milkshape. If that is the case, and you want to go farther with CG modeling, you need to get some different software.

The internet is packed with tips and tutorials as far as CG modeling goes. This site is probably a good place to start.

Good luck and don't give up.

its with Wings3D,
i know im gonna add alot more detail once i smoothed it once (made more polys to work with)
I jsut want it to keep its basic shape.

Dont make hardedges, model the edges yourself.

How's this coming along Kralle?

Check it out... if you put that image in wings using an image plane and block your model in around it you'll start with a better foundation to work with.

Have you done the tutorials found in the sticky in the Wings forum, I know you want to make something good now, but after you do those tutorials it is a million times easier to work with the polys.

Let's see an update when you get a chance.

thats the same as tracing... i avoid it at all cost, and will only do such a thing only if disaster strikes and i am unable to model something with the bare naked eye. Doing so also forfeits the ability to recognize proportions with out help from measurement.

but anyways he's right, do use rotoscoping options/imagine planing to get the proxy shape down.

what u are more concerened with rigth now is hard body modeling. The trick is to use multiple levels of bevel, or extrude face and scale down. Or add more "isos"/lines where u want ur hard edges, and then use geometry approximation or subdivision. When there are lines close to gether, using geo approximation or sub D will create a hard edge that (isnt razor sharp) but will make it look like a real edge.

make a box and then extrude from it use boolean where needed
desert eagle is hard.
why dont you try a glock first there much easier

With all the rounded bits, I would have thought that modelling with splines may be more suited to the task. Don't know if Wings supports splines though - best of luck with it.
