There is probably an obvious answer to this but,

How do you 'preview' render just your selected object? Say you may have ten obects in your scene but you only want to 'preview' render the object which is selected.

Is there a mel script out there that can do this or is there an easier way. I don't want to have to keep going into render stats and switching on and off the primary visibility.

hi oliverhenry8,

I just put this together quickly and it should do the trick. Just place these scripts in your render options.

Pre render MEL:

InvertSelection; $selected = `ls -sl`; HideSelectedObjects;

Post render MEL:

select $selected;ShowSelectedObjects;InvertSelection;

Thanks for the effort, works very well.
I did a bit of detective work and there is an option in the preview settings to switch on render only selected.
